variety p.23 vol. 2 c.2--4
I'm somewhat surprised, to say the least

I should be able to get my hands on that issue in the next few days. No context, nothing?
Though now that I think about it, how many original musicals opened in 2004? Bombay Dreams, Dracula, and The Frogs are the only other ones I can think of. The rest were revivals.
So if Variety named Brooklyn the top original musical of 2004, I wouldn't be that surprised. The top show, on the other hand? Not by a long shot. The Assassins revival alone should eliminate that possibility. Not to mention plays- not that people here tend to remember that they exist.

Especially since Variety lambasted the show. This is quite the anomaly.

Reviews don't mean anything, audiences are loving this show!

this doesn't seem to gel with the show being added to the TDF list today. weird business, Broadway.

And The Frogs is only semi-new.
Weird.

Well, 2004 was a crappy year for new musicals, no doubt. 2003 had a few decent to good shows, and 2005 at least has some promise.
I think Little Women and Spamalot are gonna be dukeing it out for 2005. And I'm guessing Jo March is gonna be whooping Lancolot's ass! Updated On: 11/6/04 at 12:30 AM

I doubt the jukebox musicals are going to be much good, but there's also The Light in the Piazza to consider.

I agree, I dont think the jukebox musicals will go to well either. Although, some of them might go as family shows, God knows they ALWAYS do well!

I dunno. I think 2005 will be the great test of jukebox musicals. Is there room for more than Mamma Mia? I don't think Movin' Out or The Boy From Oz truly counted, so the upcoming shows will really determine whether jukebox shows are the future of Broadway.
God, I hope not. MAMMA MIA's awfulness is enough to hold broadway over until 2024
It is a very busy winter and spring season for new musicals, both of the jukebox variety (Good Vibrations, All Shook Up, possibly Jersey Boys), and with original scores (Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Spamalot, Light in the Piazza, Little Women) and a movie-to-stage transfer with some new songs (Chitty Chitty Bang Bang). That's eight new musicals on the way, and at least two of them (Light in the Piazza, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels) have received especially promising out of town reviews.
There were seasons in the past like 1989, that produced three new musicals total, or 1995, when there were just two new musicals. I'm excited that so many new musicals are on the way. As for the "jukebox" musicals, they are at least a step up from the bookless, aimless musical revues of the 1980s and 1990s that attempted to ape the success of Ain't Misbehavin', with a bunch of people in evening clothes making goo-goo eyes at each other all night.
TOP SHOW? Perplexing, to say the least.
What did they base this decision on?
A whole bunch of just average musicals opened this year.
Really? Gracious! I keep hearing form everyone that it stinks like scallions.
How can you name that the hottest show of the year with this year not even over???
Spence,
Have you polled all of the audiences to know that they are loving the show? NO... you just want people to believe that. The night that we saw it, I saw more eye-rolling than I have ever seen at a Broadway show. I know around 10 people that have seen the show since we saw it, and 8 of 10 hated it... the other 2 said it was okay.

Simple. Like I said, if what they're really naming is the hottest new musical, then the competition is over. There's no more new musicals opening until 2005.
However...Hugo, I'm searching Variety and I'm not seeing the article you're referring to. Maybe it hasn't made it online yet, but I'd appreciate some kind of headline or article name.
