Buffy: Once More With Feeling...

I was listening to the Broadway Radio and a song from the musical episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer came on, and I was so happy! I'm a big Buffy fan (well, maybe a bigger fan of the first few seasons than the latest ones) and I loved that musical episode. Did anyone else see it awhile back?
I'd love to see Sarah Michelle Gellar on Broadway. She's not a horrible singer, and I'm sure with some training she could do well. Buffy the Musical sounds like fun. But then again, Vampires aren't very popular on Broadway right now...

I saw it I think I actually have it on tape. I thought "once more with feeling" was a fun episode. I even have the CD my mom got it for me last Christmas.
I don't know if I would really want to see her on a Broadway stage. I just see her more as a TV star but ya never know.

SMG hated doing the singing for the show. She said that she wanted someone else to do her singing while she mouthed, but changed her mind when she realized Buffy's season 6 arc was going to be laid out in that episode.
I personally love the music, and not just because I'm a crazy fan. Emma Caulfield and Amber Benson really missed their musical calling. And of course Anthony Head kicked ass vocally as he always does. Now if only Angel could do a musical....le sigh.

Even though Buffy moved to UPN.
Did it then adopt the 'UPN Style?'

Posted: 11/20/03 at 11:40amThe last couple years on UPN were the series worst, but that was b/c of producer Marti Noxon's advancement and Joss Whedon's disinterest. Other than that, the show was one of the best written and acted on TV in my opinion.

Well, as a "Crazy fan" of buffy, I suppose I'm a little biased...But I had to comment on this thread. First of all... as for the WB shows being crap. Yes, most are. BUT, Buffy had some of the most compelling and witty dialogue I have ever seen... and I am a tv junkie! The acting was incredible, and the stories were very moving. As for UPN airing the worst two seasons... I have to disagree. Season six was just incredible.
The musical was a television phenomenon that didn't get the credit it deserved. Although some of the music was mediocre, it was the meaning of the entire episode that hit home for me. It was about how music can bring out our deepest and most secret passions. It took so many different genres of musical theater and brought them into one show. It was extremely clever. For fans of the show, it was a giant transition for many of the characters, and some of the songs played on the underlying themes of the entire series. Themes of finding who you are and who you want to be in this crazy world of ours. Musical Blashphemy or WB Crap? I think not.

I LOVE Once More With Feeling. Buffy was definitely not your typical UPN show. It took an iffy premise and turned it into one of the funniest, compelling, moving dramedies on television.
The musical episode is full of gems- dancing demons, people singing praise for the dry cleaners ("They Got the Mustard Out!"), a purposely cheesy homage to corny slo-mo 1980s boxing/training montages.
I wouldn't go near a solo cd by any of the performers- Anthony Stewart Head and Amber Benson (a horrendous actress, by the way) are the two who are most at ease vocally, but they're a LONG way off from impressive.
Still, this is a fun addition to a great series. I also know quite a few non-fans who LOVE the musical ep.

Posted: 10/13/04 at 3:08pmI wasn't a big Buffy fan, but i loved that episode. A year or two back the Yale Cabaret theater here in CT presented it as a stage musical and it was even better than the episode in my opinion. I think it would make a great off-broadway show.

I think Gilmore Girls and Everwood are exceptionally well acted.
However, the casting person for 7th Heaven seems to have a thing for boys with dimples and idiotic expressions. Every actor under 25 seems to be a "himbo".

Actually, Anthony Stewart Head already has a solo cd out, entitled Music for Elvators. and it's fantastic! James Marsters has quite a few recordings as well. He is in a band called Ghost of the Robot or something like that, and they are very successful around LA. Head has been doing musicals in England for years. So for people to say that these actors are intalented muscally is ridiculous.
As fir the comment about 7th Heaven... I totally agree! The casting on that show is terrible. It's really gone down the tubes.

Posted: 10/21/04 at 12:56pmI did love that episode. I was a stand in for SMG for a few years on that show and it was more fun to work on it then to watch it but my roommate is OBSESSED so I had no choice bit to watch is as well!

is she really as big of a bitch as they say?
i think anthony head and james marsters have the most potential out of any of the BTVS actors. I wouldn't pay to see SMG sing. she was definitely the weakest one there.

I mocked my friend when she told me about the ep, and then she gave me the music and I saw it shortly after, and I must say, I really liked it. I thought it was done in a clever way and several of the songs are quite funny.
They aren't all the best singers but that makes it even more amusing!

I, also, am a HUGE Buffy fan, and I love that ep, but I do not think it would work as a stage show. It's a middle episode of the 6th season--you have to really know the characters to understand it, otherwise a lot of the stuff--especially 'I'll Never Tell' doesn't make any sense.
But how *incredibly* hot is James Marsters when he sings?!?! UGH! Siiiigh...

Eh. For an acting class, it would work. As it's own show...not so much.
I also ADORE James Marsters. When he sings "Let Me Rest In Peace"...good lord.
OY! James Marsters for Roger in the Rent movie!

Posted: 3/6/05 at 6:06pmI thought I'd bump this pretty old thread since all the talk about the 7th Heaven musical...I think this is an example of what can happen when this concept actually works...even though most of the cast can't sing, it's a great episode that pokes fun at musicals, and makes sense within the episode, and proves that Joss Whedon is AMAZINGLY talented!

I'm a huge Buffy fan and I loved this episode with a passion. Have the CD too.
I can't stand Amber Benson so "Under Your Spell" is always a skip track for me, but she did hold her own in the reprise with Anthony Stewart Head which I love. Sadly, yes, SMG cannot sing.
But I loved the way it was such a nod to Joss Whedon's love of musicals.

I was kind of dissappointed in James Marster's songs, but he was dead sexy so who cares! Yeah, Amber was probably the best singer of the girls, but that wasn't really my favorite song either

I really enjoyed this episode. Almost enough to buy that season on DVD. But I dont think Wheadon would really want this show to go on Broadway. For a TV musical, it was great, but I think he'd probably be embarrassed to see it on Broadway. That said, I'd love to see a Wheadon produced, maybe even partially Wheadon composed, musical on broadway. He really is a genius.
And Anthony Stewart Head should do more of anything. It'd kick ass to see him on stage, but more film/tv would be great too. The ultimate in old british guy.
