I went to the show last night not knowing anything about the show except that it ran for yrs and yrs and the music was written by Tom Jones....(which may be the reason I stayed away). But I was given an opportunity to see it for free last night and thoroughly enjoyed it. It was just a very entertaining show, yes a little over the top, but not taking itself too seriously. But more important....I left the theater with a little crush on Burke Moses. I've seen him before, but never this close and the guy just ooozes sex appeal. He's got the greatest facial expressions...and oh what a smile. The show is worth seeing just for him (though the whole cast was great). I've got something to daydream about on another dull day at work.

The music was actually written by one of the most talented musicians ever, Mr. Harvey Schmidt. Tom Jones wrote the book and lyrics and, under the name Thomas Bruce, is portraying the Old Actor in this production, just as he did in the original production 45 years ago.

Yay, another fan!!!
Some Fantasticks stuff over here:

I am completely in love with this production!!!
Burke is great too...after listening to Mr. Orbach's "Try to Remember" over and over and over...nothing can compare...but he does a fine job.
(I kept thinking Marc Kudisch would make a great El Gallo...or even Cheyenne Jackson.)
The two young romantic leads are wonderful. They work so well together!
I just love this show so much :)
when Burke is in the right role (and this one is in his type) he is truly magical. He was great in THE FROGS and also replacing in KISS ME KATE. It's hard to fathom his temperament meshing with Mr. Jones, but if that doesn't show in the production, then God bless.
BTW, speaking of "oozing sex appeal", nice avatar, BLOKE.
I know right. I used to see him in the gym all the time.....definitely motivating. I don't see him anymore and looking at this weeks New York magazine, looks like he moved out of the neighborhood. I miss him. hehe
But back to Burke. I think this was only his 3rd time doing the show, and I thought he was great.
I think I may understand your previous Tom Jones comment, jakebloke. Perhaps you confused the renowned playwright of The Fantasticks with another, shall we say less-theatrically-inclined, Tom Jones -- he of "It's Not Unusual (to Be Loved by Anyone)" fame. I too shudder to think what one of his musicals might look like.

Very funny! :)
Yes, different Tom Jones.
HAHAHA....I hope so. I was only going on what people have told me in the past.....so certainly not properly educated. Thank you for clearing that up.

I'm really glad you ended up liking the show!!
the lyricist/librettist/actor Tom Jones is very funny when talking about the pop singer one...pointing out that the Welsh (is that correct--some kind of Brit) pop singer chose that name, while the Texan was born with it....the choice was obviously for the sex appeal associated with the Texan.
