Burn The Floor Review 8/29/09- Matinee

Okay so after the Broadway in Bryant Park performance I really wanted to see this show.

I lost the Avenue Q lotto so I went and got a Rush Ticket to the show. I was Balcony Row D 104. The Balcony was probably 30% full and of corse my row was the row that was completely full so I had no room around me (I moved at intermission). The view is fine but I think I was a bit separated from the dancers.

I was very excited but I never got what I was looking for. The dancers are amazing and they all look incredible. I like dance and I like So You Think Yo Can Dance so I thought I would like it. I really only like the Samba/Cha Cha numbers. I thought the rest was incredibly boring. The number I saw in the park was by FAR the best.

Anya and Pasha were good but no better than the rest and they have the least amount of stuff to do. Honestly I would suggest to skip this show. Don't waste your money.

It will not last till January. The house was 50% full on a Saturday. Not good.

I'm a professional. Whenever something goes wrong on stage, I know how to handle it so no one ever remembers. I flash my %#$&. "Jayne just sat there while Gina flailed around the stage like an idiot."

I agree...I saw the "other" couple (from Dancing w/the stars) and thought the only thing they had going for them was they had the best of the choreography and didn't have to work as hard.

And I agree...the dancing was great, but it got pretty boring-- even though you could appreicate the ability. It was like watching a really good dance recital.

I, too, love SYTYCD, and I guess I was hoping I'd get the same sense of satisfaction from BTF. Not even close. I don't see it making it throught to Jan, either.

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

Something to keep in mind: this show doesn't NEED to fill the theater in order to keep itself running. It's not expensive and can make a weekly profit without full houses.

Also, it was never intended as a long run. This Broadway production is just to brand the show before it launches a North American tour.

Actually, can't some shows close if they aren't filling a certain capacity?

It doesn't need to fill the theater but it should. It needs to be making enough money. And if it was that empty at the end of the summer imagine what October will be like?

I also forgot to mention that I hated the singers. I couldn't stand the female one. Also the way they spotlighted her I couldn't concentrate on the dancing.

I'm not sure what you mean by that. It should because...every show technically should fill its theater? Or some other reason? And what I was saying is that this show does make enough money when playing to half-full houses (though I believe its percentage capacity is still significantly above 50%). The production is fulfilling the producers' expectations.

Also, its first few sold-out weeks will go a long way towards sustaining the show through these rough weeks.

I'm saying every show should fill it's theater but not all can. These show doesn't even come close to filling the theater. And even though the show did okay during the first few weeks does not mean it can carry them through January.

Chita, you are vastly underestimating the power that they will have when the two dancing shows are back on TV mid-Sept (one of which has a judge as a producer of BTF who def will be mentioning the show). With that also comes what I would expect to be a huge ad blitz. May seem stupid to extend now, but I bet once the shows start back up, it might not be.

Yes but you don't realize how bad the September/October months are. It won't make it through easily.

I was at this same performance. I was seated in the first row of the orchestra, right side, aisle seat, right next to the stairs going up to the stage. I almost got smacked a few times by the dancers!

I had a completely different experience than Chita. I loved the show! The dancers were phenomenal and looked amazing. The only slow parts for me were the waltzes. I didn't expect much other than a showcase of different dance styles, but I got more than I bargained for.

I didn't think the female singer was very good either, but I did like a majority of the music that was used, particularly "Sway". The finale was a lot of fun too.

I also like SYTYCD and thought Anya and Pasha were not given much to do, but I understand they are just temporary replacements. Their spotlight slow dance was a highlight for me.

For what it's worth, the orchestra looked pretty much full. I guess the mezz and balcony are not selling.
