Does anyone else agree that producers are ignoring another Best Picture Oscar by not making a movie remake of "Cabaret." I mean, I love the original with Liza, but the stories are so different. I mean, the original is based on the Isherwood Stories, so it is a more faithful recount of what actually happened to Isherwoord. But the stage version, especially the revival, was absolutely breathtaking...I saw it five times!! Most of the time in the last row on the bar stools, I loved it! I just think it is time to make this into a movie. Do you realize how many actresses will kill to play Sally?? I mean, I loved Chicago (both the movie and revival) and I think Velma and Roxie are great characters, but Sally Bowles is one of the most amazing roles a woman can play (next to Momma Rose, of course...among others) and I know there will be so many actresses who will want to play this part. And the Emcee too, so many actors would kill to play that part.

I don't know about everyone else but I think this movie is screaming for a remake adapted to be more like the stage show. I only see good things for it. You listening, Miramax?

Unless it's done revival style, no freaking way.

i completly agree... if they make a movie (which i wouldn't mind) it should be of the revival versoin... not the original, and definetly not the horrible 80's version...

I really don't think that a "Cabaret" remake is a good idea.

Neither do I, but if push comes to shove, revival style only.

I would like to see an original movie musical, instead of these broadway knock offs...don't get me wrong, 'Chicago' is my favorite movie of all time and I am really excited to see 'Phantom', but I think it would be great to see some original work.

I just have these images of other "brilliant idea" remakes like "Psycho" and "The Music Man".

The original movie is a classic for many reasons.

And as much as people seem to want to believe otherwise, the revival was not very different at all from the original, the 80's revival, and the film. Certainly not different enough to warrant making another film version.

Please, God no. The movie that already exists is brilliant. No one can do it better than Fosse. NO ONE!!!!! re: CABARET movie remake

I never said I believed there was a huge difference between the original and revival. But, remakes of "Hairspray" and "The Producers" are no different than that of a "Cabaret" remake. The plots are almost exactly the same. Plus, the movie left out a lot of good music and the entire romance between Fraulein Schneider and Herr Schultz. I know that they were added for the musical, but I still believe a remake would be a wonderful idea.

HAIRSPRAY and THE PRODUCERS are completely different - the original films were not musicals.

I know the movies weren't musicals, but the story is the same. I'm not putting down those remakes at all, in fact I am very excited for them. I just think that the revival was so powerful and should be brought to film.

No one is denying that the revival was powerful.

But there is little point in trying to improve perfection.

Oh no, I don't mean they should improve it. I would just love to see it preserved on film. The revival of Chicago was perfection as well, and it did amazing on film. I think a Cabaret remake could definitely reach today's generation who have no knowledge of the original, plus it would give people all over the country to see it.

I don't know, I guess it's just personal preference. I'm still pulling for it.

CHICAGO had not been filmed before. That was not a remake.

Exactly, Rath.
A remake of CABARET would be bogged down with inevitable comparisons to the classic original.

I don't understand why everything has to be redone. Watch the original and appreciate it. It's great filmmaking.

I know Chicago had never been filmed before. And comparisons are what every movie remake faces, but there are those that come out better than the first. Like I said, it's personal preference. I really wish they had made a video of the revival, one that was not only accessible through the library in NY. I really wish PBS had broadcast the closing performance like that did with "Contact." I love when they do their Stage on Screen's. I hope the next is coming soon.

I personally would love to see a Cabaret movie remake. With recent movie successes like Chicago and A Christmas Carol and now Phantom, I think Cabaret will be a huge hit. The question is though, who to cast in it. Perhaps Bernadett Peters or Bebe Neuwirth as Sally Bowles. Maybe Jason Alexander as the Emcee? What do you think?

I'm not reading this whole thread but I for one would adore seeing Mendes direct a new film version. The original was one I never really cared for but the stage version is one of my alltime favorites and I certanly wouldn't mind seeing his vision captured on film.

Well, I think that Ms. Peters is too old to play Sally and that Mr. Alexander is too round to play the emcee.

If a new film happens, I want Natasha & Alan.
