Posted: 6/5/06 at 4:08pmThe originals because Joel Gray really got the evil of the part, the underlying creey, vile, disgusting and debased evil of the Weimar Republic and Jill Haworth as Sally Bowles because, frankly she could play talentless yet utterly fascinating so well. After I saw Liza Minelli in the part the show was ruined for me because I found it hard to imagine a poor singer in the role.

Posted: 6/5/06 at 5:06pmI understand. I saw the movie version first and now when I hear Natasha or anyone else who does not have a great voice sing the songs, I cringe severely.

The best "duo" I saw was Adam Pascal/Susan Egan.
Susan Egan was definitely the best Sally.
Raul Esparza WAS the Emcee.

overthemoon419,
I understand what you're saying. Susan Egan is a wonderful singer and again, this is the problem I have with the show. I think as a piece of theater, it works so much better with someone who CAN'T really sing well as a lead.
Judy Dench starred in the show in London and she was no Susan Egan. And it made for amazing theater because she had to work even harder to sell the role, plus Sally Bowles' vulnerability was so much more visable and tangible without the slickness of a great stage voice to hide behind.

Susan Egan was brilliant. My only complaint about her, which is sort of paradoxical, is that her voice was too pretty for the part. I loved her so, so much anyway, though.
Being that I saw her opposite Jon Secada and then Adam Pascal, and no other pairs, I'd say she and Adam, cause Secada was dreadful. And whereas Raul may be the most outstanding Emcee, Gina Gershon scares me, and I think Molly Ringwald is *too* dreadful a singer.

Raul Esparza was stunning as the Emcee.
My favorite Sally was Gina Gershon.

JoeKV, if you saw the Norbert Leo Butz production I did (in L.A.), Sally was Terri Hatcher. Maybe that is why you forgot.
I loved him, too. She was actually better than I had expected she'd be, but definitely not my fave.
