This is one of the best productions of anything I've ever seen in my life. And it's not even a full production! Take that, you big expensive spectacles.

I've been waiting to hear Kristen's "Glitter and Be Gay" and I must say after seeing it, I am blown away. It's nice to see a Cunegonde let totally loose. She made it look so easy, that's how it should be done. That's all for now.

Singing should ALWAYS look easy. I don't care WHAT you're singing.

I think it is WONDERFUL so far. The guy that is playing Candide is annoying me with his body movements and facial expressions but he has a great voice. And DO NOT even get me started on Kristen. Wow!!

Though his voice is great, i cannot stand watching this Candide...he is too awkward, and instead of being young and naive...he seems old and confused. The show is phenomenal however!

...guess who's not getting it in Dallas. What crap! They are showing some stupid thing abot Winston Churchill...pass.

Paul Groves, I believe his name is, playing Candide, doesn't really have much presence. He has a fine voice for the part, but Chenoweth is ridiculously phenomenal in this show..absolutely stealing the show. LuPone is also wonderful. Great cast overall, though, and it sounds and looks beautiful.
Great job to everyone involved!

I agree. Great Job. I was impressed and enthralled at the whole thing. I am going to get a cd of CANDIDE as soon as I can. I liked everyone's performance except the guy that played Candide (acting wise) and Patti Lupone is a great actress but she slurred a lot of her words and I couldn't understand what she was saying. Besides that I am glad that I taped it so I can watch it again and again.

I sang that final piece, Make Your Garden Grow, at a concert a few years ago - I was the soprano (Cunegonde's part). What a thrill to have the chorus come in behind you and you're singing over and above them.

That was excellent. I am pleased I watched it. Kristin was amazing, as usual, and the guy playing Candide had a great voice (although I agree his acting wasn't all that great). It was also very funny, something I frankly wasn't expecting.

I didn't know anything about Candide, and now after only watching an hour of it, I'm in love with it. I can't wait for the dvd to come out...and im guessing a cd? Kristin's voice is heavenly. Her comidic timing is perfection.

Spider, now your next hurdle is selecting which Candide recording to purchase. I have seven in my collection, and every recording reflects a different version of the material. Songs are dropped and added, or feature different lyrics, or different placement within the material.
My favorite is STILL the original Broadway cast recording, which is quite different from the version presented tonight. The Scottish Opera version has a lot to recommend it, but is missing some key passages, like the entire Auto-da-fe, but does have "Martin's Laughing Song," "Nothing More Than This," and "Ringaroundtherosie" none of which were presented tonight. The City Opera version has some mic problems, but is probably the closest to this version of the material. Bernstein's version on DG is the most comprehensive, but really is done in by plodding tempos.
The 1973 Broadway revival recording (not on CD), has the entire show (save for "We Are Women" and "Dear Boy"), but some incredibly poorly sung performances, and a reduced orchestration. The 1999 Broadway revival recording is pretty deadly. I have the National Theatre recording and like some aspects of it, but still return to the Original Broadway cast recording and the Scottish Opera version.
I enjoyed the concert version tonight, although Lupone was all over the place in "We Are Women," never settling comfortably in head or chest voice.

I am abso-tute-lutely in love with this music. Leonard Bernstein is a genius, and Kristin definitely did it justice plus more. I agree that the man who played Candide was definitely not too marvelous of an actor even though his voice was beautiful, especially in the final number of "Make Our Garden Grow". I have never heard any of Candide and now am absolutely longing to get the CD and sing some songs!!!! yayyy!!!! Kristin was phenomenal... she's phenomenal in everythingggg she does!

It was wonderful to hear this with the Philharmonic. My favorite number is the finale, and I doubt if it has ever sounded more thrilling than with the orchestra and that big choir.

Kristin was breathtaking as usual. Even if you're turned off by her personality, there's no denying that that girl is a kick ass coloratura. Loved her, as usual.
Patti was in fine shape. I like the "Patti LuPone is in our show!" jokes through out. Her accent was a bit too rich at times and I couldn't understand a word she was saying. But I still thoroughly enjoyed her. Someone write this woman a show so she can com back to Broadway!
What a glorious score. Up until this evening, I had only heard "Glitter and Be Gay." I may have to go out and purchase the OBC.
Overall, lovely show. For once, an evening of television I don't regret.

The staging of "Glitter and Be Gay" in the City Opera version, and Erie Mills' delirious performance of it, is still my favorite version I've witnessed. It was staged on a staircase, with Cunegonde wrestling each jewel off of the neck and fingers of a woman playing the harmonium.

I didn't think Paul Groves was that bad. He was adorable! He has a very nice voice as well.
Kristin, as usual, was spectacular! She is absolutely hilarious as Cunegonde! And, of course, her rendition of "Glitter and Be Gay" was fantastic.
And Patti LuPone... who can say anything bad about her? Excellent, as usual.

Honestly? The only things I liked were Patti Lupone and Kristin Chenoweth.
I thought many part were rather boring.
But Cheno and Ms.Patti LuPone were amazing as uasual!

Kristin is the dream coloratura of any opera company - she's technically perfect, naturally musical, and her acting is spectacular.
