I am not a fan of the musical but I wouldn't put it ANYWHERE near the top of "worst musicals ever"

Interesting...what exactly MAKES it the worst show ever written?

I'm sorry you felt that way. I, personally, think that Carousel is one of the greatest American musicals ever written (top 10 for sure). The score alone cements its status. As much as I would love a remake (that Shirley Jones/Gordon MacRae atrocity shouldn't be around), I can't see this happening too well. Jackman's too old, and if memory serves me correctly, Baz Luhrman is directing this. Also, I don't see what else they can do to make it fresh that Nicholas Hytner didn't already do. If they were to follow his mold, then I would be at ease about this film.

From what could be gathered from media interviews, Hugh has never mentioned that Baz Luhrmann is at all connected with the remake of CAROUSEL. Hugh is producing the musical in collaboration with FOX and the project has been in development for several years now. There is now a revised script by David Magee, Oscar-nominated screenplay writer for FINDING NEVERLAND, and there is the possibility that there might be some changes to suit more modern audiences. I would think that the focus will be cinematic rather than that of a stage production.

I was lukewarm about Carousel, until I completely on a whim, went to the final performance a few years ago at Lincoln Center. It was one of my all time best theatrical experiences. I was bawling like a baby.

I wasn't at the concert that Hugh did with Audra McDonald back in 2002, but I heard it was fabulous and Hugh received rave reviews.

If anyone is interesting in listening to exactly what Hugh said, it's at the end of this video interview:
