I think we are more forgiving of Billy because he's a young man with anger issues and a good heart. Even then, it's always a very fine line for the actor to play it right.
Make him older (especially with a girlfriend half his age) and I think the violence is going to upstage the redemption.

I don't think that Anne Hathaway has a fantastic voice, but I suppose she's good for Hollywood standards.
And I think that BrianS makes a good point.

I agree, and I still do not get why people rave over her... She is good, yes, well, mediocre at best

Posted: 2/23/09 at 1:13pmI also agree with BrianS. I think Hugh Jackman can sell almost anything and I do want him to have a good movie musical role, but the domestic violence aspect of Carousel is difficult enough as it is without the added power differential of an age gap.

DV's actually about control, not anger. I would argue that Billy was trying to assert some control over Julie because he couldn't control other aspects of his life.
But, yeah, he is pretty angry as well.

I'd always put Billy as no more than twenty-one, and even more immature than that emotionally. Probably between eighteen and twenty-one.
But, who knows? Someone as talented as Hugh might pull it off.

Hope so. At the time when it was first announced as a project for his production company, with Fox support, Hugh said that they wanted to contemporize the original musical.

Hugh did a video interview this week with Ryan Seacrest on E! News promoting "Wolverine" and at the end of the interview Ryan asked him that he heard he was doing "Carousel" and he wanted Anne Hathaway to star with him and asked if that was true. Hugh said yes it was, he's sent Anne the script, and he was practically begging Anne to say yes. I've read that Fox 2000 has put this on the "fast-track" and Hugh said he wants to film this within twelve months so sounds like it may be happening soon.

I saw that Seacrest interview, too. It follows after Variety reported that the CAROUSEL remake is now high priority on FOX 2000 film projects. Also interesting to note that they have updated the script ( written by David MaGee, who wrote the screenplay adaptation for FINDING NEVERLAND, for which MaGee received an Oscar nomination). Variety reports, "keeps the timeless spirit of the Rodgers & Hammerstein classic, but injects relevance for a contemporary audience."
Hopefully, the musical will appeal to modern moviegoers and that this recent Entertainment Weekly survey on the appeal of Hugh's new projects supports a good potential for the movie --

Wolverine Sequel ( Japan) - 35%
Carousel - 31%
Return to Broadway in Houdini - 25%
Others - 8%
Hugh seems eager to get if off the ground now - he has said he wants to film it within 12 months, presumably before he returns to Broadway for HOUDINI.

I agree with you about DRIVE, as I have also read the novella by James Sallis. Hugh calls it a film noir type of story and has said that he is impressed with the screenplay adaptation that has been recently completed ( by H. Amini).
If I am not mistaken, while he has not mentioned the actual filming start, he has mentioned during the WOLVERINE promo tour that he would also like to shoot the movie before the return to Broadway. Initially, there was already a director attached to it ( Neil Marshall) and Universal has picked up the project, but I am not sure if Mr. Marshall is still proceeding with it.
It could be a gem of a movie, with an indie vibe...and may even unexpectedly get some Oscar buzz, if done right.
