Christy Carlson Romano won't give up her day job for politics

Christy Carlson Romano moves so fast she's a blur. If the 21-year-old isn't voicing the heroic Kim Possible on the Disney Channel series of the same name--for which she has been nominated for an Emmy Award as Outstanding Performer in an Animated Series--she's recording a new song for an album.

If she's not meeting MTV executives about a possible new show, she's receiving honors from her hometown of Milford, Conn. And if she's not playing Belle on Broadway in "Beauty and the Beast," she's interning for Sen. Chris Dodd (D-Conn.) or studying at Columbia University or turning up in an "Even Stevens' " rerun.

Right now, though, Romano is on the phone to chat about another project, "The Kim Possible Movie: So the Drama," which will debut Friday on the Disney Channel. In the movie, Romano will sing the new song "Could It Be."

Q. How does "So the Drama" differ from an episode of "Kim Possible?"

A. It's a special thing the channel is doing. It's the first-ever animated Disney Channel Original Movie. It would've been great if it had actually been released in theaters, but this is just as good because the fans know what they're going to get. I was in another Disney Channel Movie, "Cadet Kelly," that I think to this day is unprecedented in its ratings. They've done 56 movies so far and "Cadet Kelly" is the highest-rated ever, and I'm hoping "Kim Possible" might break the record.

Q. If Kim and Ren from "Even Stevens" got into a fight, who'd win?

A. Oh, it's hard to say because both of them are so alike. They're both pretty tough girls. So I don't know who'd win. I'd probably go in and be the referee and try to stop them.

Q. If you could only act or sing, which would you do?

A. I'd sing. I feel like singing is my true calling.

Q. You recently received a "Connecticut's Finest Award" and that same day your hometown of Milford celebrated "Christy Carlson Romano Day." That must have been pretty cool.

A. It's the highest honor I think I'll ever receive, short of actually running for a political seat in Connecticut. And short of not having a parade, it was just the coolest thing in the world to see my fans come out and have a good time. It was such an ego boost, but it really meant a lot to me because it's my hometown and my family is there. My family has an 80-year history (in Milford).

Q. You also recently worked as an intern in Washington, D.C. Did that turn you off to the way our government works or make you appreciate our system more?

A. It made me think much more positively. I felt like I had the power to change things. It was that feeling of, "Wow, I could really do this. This is something I could go into."

Q. Will your fans ever lose you to politics?

A. No, they'll never lose me. Never, never. I'm kind of what they call a lifer. I started so early there's no way that I could possibly get out.

I don't mind CCR. Don't care for her singing. As for Kim Possible...I hate that show!

Milford isn't really that far from me. CT can be very boring, so it's good to have some attention on the state. I think she used to attend St. Joseph's High School in Trumbull, CT with a family friend's daughter.

Yup, Milford's near Fairfield. It sort of goes Fairfield, Bridgeport, Stratford, and Milford, going east. It's my hometown, actually...she was ALL over the papers when they named February 22nd Christy Carlson Romano Day. Her family's been friends with mine since I don't even know when.
