All shows must come to and end. Wicked will. Hairspray will. The Producers will. Mamma Mia will. Just not for awhile.
The closing of shows leads to more theaters being open, which allows newer shows to come into town. It happens.

I know, but it seems plays are really having a tough time.

I've always noticed that plays never stay on for that long. What has been the longest running play?

Life With Father ran for 3224 performances. It is the longest running non-musical in Bway history.

Of all time on Broadway.

Do me a favor. Continue going to Wonderful Town, Avenue Q and Forbidden Broadway. If any of these shows close I will be very upset.

Except maybe The Lion King. That looks like it'll run forever.
After the nuclear war, there will only be two things left: cockroaches and The Lion King musical.

Seriously. What stops THE LION KING from running for 100 years? I'm being literal too. Did CATS close because they were tired of it or was it not making money anymore?

I sure hope the cockroaches have enough sense to realize that The Lion King represents the Disney-Dumbening down of Broadway. We can only hope...

I don't quite understand the vehemence against Disney and its perceived "dumbing down" of Broadway. Afterall, Disney helped keep composers and lyricists like Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz afloat...
Not to mention, for many of us "young 'uns" out there, Disney and its various movies were our first encounters with the musical form... a plot, driven by songs...
Having said all of that, Disney does leave a lot to be desired with the current three shows it has on the Great White Way. Which makes its anticipated Mary Poppins, the Great White Hope...
But, sorry for taking over the thread.

Exactly. They are a predictable plot with songs, easily understood by children. Now, I may be wrong, but I wouldn't call that "intelligent".

all of the 'modern' Disney animated films of the late 80s-90s are EXACTLY the same in every way. The exact same structure, exact same muscial composition... look.. Under the sea in Mermain, be our guest in beauty and friend like me from aladdin are ALL the same thing!

Not intelligent, but entertaining.
Half of what's currently on Broadway at the moment is hardly "intelligent." Nor is it Disney.
However, it is a shame that all the intelligent shows are closing this weekend....

Corine, between you and I we could keep Forbidden Broadway open forever!
"All I ask of you is one thing: please don't be cynical. I hate cynicism -- it's my least favorite quality and it doesn't lead anywhere. Nobody in life gets exactly what they thought they were going to get. But if you work really hard and you're kind, amazing things will happen."

I actually love The Lion King. Taymor's direction is phenomenal and startling. People tend to forget that The Lion King is still essentially a children's/family musical - but now given a visual sophistication by Taymor.
I think Beauty And The Beast constitutes the dumbing down of Broadway. It's just a live-action facsimile of the movie with no imagination. It's Disney On Ice, without the ice.

"I know, but it seems plays are really having a tough time."
If you look at a lot of the upcoming shows, there are quite a few plays out there.
and it is sad that all these shows are coming to an end....but that's the cycle of Broadway.
On a side note, Disney on Broadway has brought a new audience to theatre...that's one of the good things disney has done...gotta admit that.
