COME FLY AWAY Reviwes

I don't understand how people can just say "it's not a good show." If you don't THINK it's a good show, then that's your opinion and you're entitled to it. But I don't get how you can completely dismiss it and say it's hands down awful and there's no arguing otherwise. I loved the show. It is possible for people to have different opinions.

Twyla's choreography is as energetic and impressive as always, and the engineering of Sinatra's vocals is well done. But I was rather bored; I confess, though, that I vastly prefer a show with dialogue and an original score when I go to see musical theatre.

With these mixed reviews does anyone think this will run for very long? Would a positive review in the Times give the show extra wow?

I think the generally mixed-to-positive reviews should ensure the show's life at least through Tony nomination time. I don't see how it couldn't be nominated for Best Choreography. Best Actor in a Musical, Best Supporting Actor in a Musical, Best Supporting Actress in a Musical and Best Director of a Musical are other deserving possilities for nomination. Their PR has their work cut out for them, but at least they have some good reviews to back it up. Here's hoping for everyone involved!!!!!

Another point to consider about Come Fly Away (and the Isherwood review) is that the show isn't trying to be anything other than what it is... It needs to fit into the "musical" category as opposed to "play" for sure but it is a dance show. People would enjoy it more if they would focus on what it IS rather than what it's NOT.

Saw Addams Family thursday night and Come Fly Away on Friday. I preferred Come Fly Away by leaps and bounds. Addams Family just didn't keep my interest. Not that Come Fly Away kept mine at all times but at least there was always something. I could watch the band or any of the other dancers or listen to Sinatra. From what most people were saying about Fly Away not having a story...i didn't care. I thought there were at least enough characters to watch and try to figure out on my own who they were and what they were trying to say. I didn't need to be spoon fed a cheesy story line based off of a cartoon strip. All in all I'd much rather go back to Come Fly Away and see more of the action happening on the stage because there are far more interesting things worth seeing again than at Adams Family. Seeing Fela this weekend and hopefully American Idiot too if I can get tickets.

I couldn't agree more with this statement.

Interesting...today's NYT had a review from their dance critic, Alastair Macaulay, which is highly negative. While Isherwood was looking at it as a Broadway show, Macaulay is critiquing it as a dance piece, and he is not happy.

The Times dance review was really poorly written... Hard to believe that it is coming from the premiere newspaper in the country. Setting that aside (because it was merely an annoyance), the critic pretty much starts out by positing that Tharp's work is not to his taste. Does that mean that show is not good or that the show is not to his taste...? Weird that the show needs to be critiqued by both disciplines and weird again that the same paper is talking out of both sides of its mouth by lauding the show on the one hand and shooting it down on the other...

I have to disagree with you; I don't think it's poorly written at all, and he most certainly does not say that Tharp's work is not to his taste; at one point he says that "in her best pieces her freedom is exhilarating." He's saying that he doesn't think this is her best work, which is quite different.
I like the fact that the Times is offering differing points of view about the same show; they have done this before with shows that are heavily dance-focused. I like reading the opinion of someone who has clearly followed Tharp's work for years, including her previous work with Sinatra songs.

karen24... you're right... I reread it and I realize now that there was no real negative bias inferred in the Times Dance review... quite the opposite as you point out. I guess I should read things more thoroughly before commenting!

Just curious... Did the Times do this with FELA?

all in all they seemed mostly positive. Congrats to them!

No problem, roadmixer...I don't think they had a dance review for Fela!, but Isherwood did publish his own piece about his conflicted feelings regarding the show, after Brantley's review had run. So that was another instance of the Times running two conflicting opinions, since as I recall Brantley's review was very positive.
Macaulay did do a piece a while back in which he discussed the choreography in several shows running at the time, all of which had been previously reviewed.
