The interviews aren't being included when it airs in the U.S., or these were special clips OF the interviews for the Japanese airing? If the former is true, I'd like to track down the interview clips. I don't know how easy that will be, but if you have any way to confirm that they're not airing in the States at all (which would be silly), please let me know. I'm only going to do the work to find them if I can find with relative certainty that we won't see them here.
"I think the musical was performed only once in Japan and it was rather a disaster (LOL)"
With numbers like "Radies who Runch" and "Being Arive" I can understand this...
As they did with the DVD of VICTOR/VICTORIA, I believe all those interviews (John Doyle, Raul Esparza, et al) will be included on the DVD as they were done for the US version. The fact that COMPANY aired in Japan first is simply rights issues PLUS, PBS airs things during sweeps and various reasons which explains the delay.
Enjoy!

Is this completely a joke thread, or is it true? I can't tell if people are making fun of everyone asking about Company, or if it really DID air here.
I ask because I actually AM living in Japan, and while it probably won't air again, I'd ask someone who could surf through Japanese websites to find out more for me, but I don't want to bother them if the whole thing is a hoax. I won't be able to see it in Jan/Feb, though I can ask someone to tape it for me for when I'm home next fall.
Also, isn't it one of the shows that airs and never repeats? How can they put it onto DVD?

It did really air in Japan.
I did NOT really go to Japan.
I don't know if it'll repeat -- here or there -- (I feel like it will, other Great Performances do) but it's being released commercially on DVD.
Clara's Pony- That was hilarious! New signature quote!

Baine, I think you're thinking of something that is aired live, as it happens, like a football game (although these days even live feeds are recorded as they go out). Company was taped at a (well, two) live performance(s), and then they edited together the best takes. So yes, it exists (will exist) on DVD, and can be aired many many many times. Which Great Performances will most definitely do, if for no other reason than to recoup their investment.
PBS/Great Performance didn't tape this -- they are only airing it. A private investor/producer had this filmed and later negotiated the US TV airings with PBS. I'm sure she was approached by Japanese sources and they handsomly paid to have the rights to air it in Japan. Since this woman OWNS the rights to this filmed version of COMPANY, she can do as she pleases with it. If she wants to offer it to CBS or even HBO, she can do so. PBS doesn't own this at all and I believe they will only make a small margin of profit when the DVD is released as I expect the DVD will be released as a PBS/Great Performance series DVD.
Thanks for the extra info!
I didn't see Company on the list for NHK foreign programming this month in our prefectural circulation, but I'll keep an eye out for it. I write for the pamphlet, too, so I should really e-mail the editor about where he gets the English list and see if he just chooses one show a day or something. *adds it to the TO DO list*
As for why I thought it wasn't going to be on DVD, I was thinking of the Live from the Lincoln Center series, which ran "Passion" and just had the two crossed in my mind.
In my defense before someone complains about how it's easy to tell the two apart, it was somewhere between 12 a.m.-1 a.m. my time when I was on here and I didn't recall what theatre "Company" even played at because I was out of the country while it was playing (I was really bitter, too, because I went home for a visit and missed it--and two other shows of the season I really wanted to see. BLEH. I was originally going home in July....)
Anyway, thanks for the clarification. I'm really excited because I can buy a DVD at some point, so it will be even better than a taped copy. It almost--ALMOST--makes up for missing it live. If only they'd taped "Grey Gardens" and "LoveMusik," too....beh.
I'll let y'all know if I manage to find it on TV here! (Actually, first I have to figure out which channel NHK IS because they don't flash logos on the screen all the time like they do in the States...but I think it's the channel that I have twice, since that's how PBS is back home....)
Don't worry about it -- a lot of people get the two confused. It happens with The Light in the PIazza all the time.
