- what, in my opinion, is the best new musical of the year.
It is something I only recently discovered in my marathon of seeing every show on Broadway after returning from abroad for a long time.
But after seeing everything, it is the MOST COMPLETE piece of musical theater I saw. A total and original vision.
I am new to the world of it, but I wanted to congratulate it because in my research I found that the producers are real lovers and believers in theater and the only ones out there right now that are truly anti-establishment and new (there is this NY TIMES article about it) and that the show in general has overseen so much adversity - it feels like a show really for the people. The second time I saw it, which I did with all the new ones, I found it had the most to say about dreamers and the dreams they weave, which I think is always at the core of great American musical theater.

Posted: 4/21/08 at 12:34pmI thought he meant that he saw this year? Not that he ever saw. I still disagree, but it's a fair statement.

Yes, for the most important nomination, in an admittedly pointless awards contest (the OCC's).
And yes, it is without a doubt the best and most complete MUSICAL of this season. A perfectly executed, brilliant satire about the artistic process.
The best commercial "straight theater" I saw this year were the first and second act of Osage County and the second act of The Seafarer.

I should never say another word about Xanadu but this sentence
"in my research I found that the producers are real lovers and believers in theater and the only ones out there right now that are truly anti-establishment and new (there is this NY TIMES article about it) and that the show in general has overseen so much adversity - it feels like a show really for the people."
is truly the most ridiculous statement ever spoken anywhere, by anyone! Can't you just say "I really really loved this show and recommend it highly" without trying to make it sound like a cure for cancer?

Posted: 4/21/08 at 7:15pmthis board has become entirely too hostile towards anything that isn't articulated properly! WickedBoy2 & JoeKv99 need to stop being bitchy about a thoroughly honestly-expressed opinion. anyways, i'm glad you enjoyed the show!

Well, I dunno, I'm sure if I felt it was a ridiculous thing to say about the show, I either wouldn't have said it or said it as a joke.
I could just say I really, really love the show, but I am more interested in it than that. The fact that it provides me an opportunity to experience a personal emotion is appreciated, but my view of the world is not limited to whether "I really, really love something or not."
I really, really love Guys and Dolls, but there is more to say about the show itself than my own emotional response.
I try to read as much information as I can about the show's origins and background because I find the process of development entertaining and interesting.

I agree with the sentiment.
I too just saw Xanadu on my recent trip and I fell in love with the show and cast. all I can think about is how I can get back to see it again.
