CRY-BABY Aims for March Broadway Debut

Cry-Baby, the new musical based upon the John Waters Universal Pictures film of the same name, is aiming for a March 2008 bow on Broadway with an official opening in April.

The musical features a book by Mark O'Donnell and Thomas Meehan and a score by David Javerbaum and Adam Schlesinger. Mark Brokaw will direct with choreography by Rob Ashford.

Set in 1954 Baltimore, Cry-Baby is described as such: "Everyone likes Ike, nobody likes communism, and Wade 'Cry-Baby' Walker is the baddest boy in town. He's a rebel with a cause — truth, justice and the pursuit of rock 'n' roll — and when he falls for a good girl, this square little suburb is sure to rock around the clock."

"I have also met him in person, and I find him to be quite funny actually. Arrogant and often misinformed, but still funny."

This will probably take the Marquis, if A TALE OF TWO CITIES doesn't snatch it up first. They're probably keeping a close watch on DROWSY.

Sounds like ALL SHOOK UP.

You know...minus the cross-dressing.

Oh man... exciting. I love that movie. But mostly because Johnny Depp is in it. re: CRY-BABY Aims for March Broadway Debut

Does this mean that Carly Jibson is going to originate her 1st role on Broadway?

If you read the article, it says that no casting has been announced.

Muscle- Yes it does! She will be playing Pepper.

This show if anything will be the next Hairspray, not the next All Shook Up.

"Oh please, Over at 'Gypsy' Patti LuPone hasn't even alienated her first daughter yet!" Mary Testa in "Xanadu" "...Like a drunk Chita Rivera!" Robin de Jesus in "In the Heights"

"B*tch, I don't know your life." -Xanadu After that if he still doesn't understand why you were uncomfortable and are now infuriated, kick him again but this time with Jazz Hands!!! -KillerTofu

I'm not gonna worry too much about that right now though.

re: CRY-BABY Aims for March Broadway Debut

CRY BABY will most likely take the Marquis, depending on DROWSY. It's rumored that DROWSY may close January 6th or so.

re: CRY-BABY Aims for March Broadway Debut

Cry Baby is going into a Nederlander and none of the other shows currently playing in a Nederlander house are closing anytime soon, so the Marquis is where it will be going.

The good news is that they didn't screw up the show- the songs are great, the book is great, the lyrics are great and the cast is phenomenal.

FYI, none of the songs from the film are in it.

Polly Bergen would be a terrific choice if she isnt still doing Desperate Housewives. She was a highlight of the movie.

re: CRY-BABY Aims for March Broadway Debut

Fanadu_Xtreme, who else is continuing on with the show from the workshop cast? I read Megan Lawrence has dropped out.
Tonya Pinkins: Then we had a "Lot's Wife" last June that was my personal favorite. I'm still trying to get them to let me sing it at some performance where we get to sing an excerpt that's gone.
Tony Kushner: You can sing it at my funeral.

re: CRY-BABY Aims for March Broadway Debut

If you can provide me with a list from the workshop cast I can tell you who is not part of it anymore.

LouW- Polly Bergen ain't doing it but you get another person who was on Desperate Housewives. And she is starring on Broadway right now!

Just imagine the sheer amount of makeup they're going to need for Hatchet-Face! NO ONE is that ugly!

re: CRY-BABY Aims for March Broadway Debut

I've never seen the movie. I want to rent it, though.

I haven't heard the songs yet, but what weirds me out is that there's a song called "Girl, Can I Kiss You With Tongue?". Huh?
