Cabaret Swastikas Causes College Controversy

The CCSF Theater Arts Department and Music Department presents the musical show Cabaret.

The show will be at the Diego Rivera Theater at 50 Phelan/Johnson in San Francisco, CA.
Show dates are April 18, 19, 25 at 8pm and 2 pm matinees on April 20 and 27.

General Admission is $15 and $10 for students and seniors.

On related news, the promotional posters and flyers featuring a provocative image of a topless woman with swastikas covering her nipples were recalled and asked to be modified without the swastikas following several complaints from concerned individuals.

You're kidding me right? Censorship in the country has reached a new low. Our college posters were similar and I've seen several posters with the like and never heard anyone complain.

"Concerned Individuals" = The college kids nobody speaks to!

I actually witnessed a lady walk out at the San Jose production and several people gasped at the first showing of the arm band with the symbol.

CCSF interim Chancellor Don Q. Griffin asked for the removal of the swastikas because of complaints and Music Dept. head Madeline Mueller complied by covering the entire breast area altogether with show dates and info.

The artwork was done by Sarah Nocktonick and was chosen out of 20 submissions from other graphic arts students.

The college production director Deborah Shaw suspects that people who don't know "Cabaret" objected to the poster.

There are many people who know "Cabaret" who thought that the artwork was perfect and it captured the decadence of the times.

I thought the same thing, CurtainPullDowner. They should re-release the poster with exposed nipples and see how the school reacts then.

I hope the college does The Producers next year.

Who are more moronic? The complainers, or the spineless dweebs who caved? The drama department should have provided the chancellor's office with a FAQ to address utterly ignorant people.

Someone tried to pull something like this at Illinois State when the All State Theatre Fest put on Parade this January. A school official gave a speech on the stage where we were performing, where we had built a proscenium designed like the Confederate flag. Someone who obviously knew nothing of the show wrote up a nasty editorial on the school's website about him speaking in front of a "prominently displayed Confederate flag" (which was actually behind the main drape at the time of the speech) and it started a nasty discussion. Luckily, this happened after the show was over so we didn't have to deal with it.
