I think she could pull it off, she's very talented!
I find womens voices so interesting. All that head voice, chest voice stuff, etc. I guess it's because I am a guy though. Thanks for the tidbit! :)

youd have to utterly astonishing to play glinda just look at Kristin Chenoweth JLT Megan Hilty, all AMAZING! I honestly dont think that even as an actress, if she can sing ,that she could pull it off..
I must be getting ahead of myself because actually interpreted the original question to mean could Reese Witherspoon sing the role of Glinda...for a possible movie? No, I don't think she could sing it, but it doesn't mean she probably wouldn't be considered for a big screen version of Wicked...if it ever happens.
No...we're talking about the stage version, still.
I'm sure if the film of WICKED were being made tomorrow, Universal would at least contemplate Reese Witherspoon and Cate Blanchett -- the two movie stars most "obviously" right for the leads.
The smartest move would be to have Kristin Chenoweth reprise the role. It would only further her cinema career. However, judging from all the news about her, she's got quite a lot on her plate at the moment.
Actually, the original question doesn't make it clear if she's asking whether Reese could play Glinda on stage or Glinda in the movie. It's kind of an open ended question. Oh well, I still say no to either LOL but I wouldn't be surprised if she were cast in the movie. I'd be disappointed (and I love Reese) but not surprised.

Why is it that broadway fans believe that broadway stars somehow automatically are best for the movie version of the show? Because they owned the part on Broadway has nothing to do with the casting of movies, which are phenomanally more expensive and therefore need 'name' cinema actors in the roles which equate to attendance which equates to INCOME. Idina and Kristen are both essentially 'nobodys' in Hollywood and in America in general, compared to their cinema equivalents. If Wicked is made into a movie, we should expect nobody from the OBC to make the grade. The movie will have Sandra Bullock opposite Reese or God-forbid, Nicole Kidman who's 'Bewitched' is absolutely stinking up the place, but it will make millions.
I'm hardly what you could call a die-hard Broadway fan. I would've put JLa because she's a much stronger comedic actress than Kristin, judging on what I've seen. HOWEVER, Kristin is making...how many movies at the moment? She's going up in Hollywood and compared to all the other Glinda's out there, she's the one who's got the movie credits to back her up.
And what about RENT? Almost no one there is a big Hollywood name except Jesse Martin and Rosario. Will it flop? Obviously not because it's got an enormous fanbase to support it. And not to mention that the trailer will attract more than just the original RENT fans.
Wicked, has a fanbase of equal size, if not larger, than RENT. If they hear that the original actress that played Glinda is coming back, they'll jump at the chance to watch it. Not everyone has access to Broadway as easily as NYCers do, and having Kristin reprising the role will make it more accessible to the rest of the nation.
And of course, if that's not enough, the entire "Ohmigosh, you've got to see this great movie..." propoganda will kick in.
I'm still waiting for Anna Nicole as Galinda. Avril Lavigne as Elphaba and Clay Aiken as Nessa......................BUY ME A TICKET NOW!!
Oh and can Josh Groban and his lack of talent play Fieyero tooo??????
I would just piss myself with joy!

All of us over on the Phantom boards were syaing the exact same thing last summer. And we all know how poor Phantom turned out.
I think RENT will be well-shot but the plot won't necessarily be accepted worldwide. It deals with some touchy issues that even some of the original cast were a little unsure of the plot at first, but it just grows on you and it deals with many problems that society has been ignoring.
I'm going to try to actually answer the question! I am one of the four people who saw Reese Witherspoon in "Vanity Fair" last fall (you didn't miss much; read the book), and she sings a bit in it. She wasn't bad but she wasn't exactly good either. With training, I don't see why she couldn't pull off at least an Applegate or a Nicole Kidman (a la Moulin Rouge), but she's no Cheno. The movie's inane revisionist interpretation of the protagonist's character was a much bigger problem.
The SNL ep with Reese Witherspoon is on Comedy Central here right now. I remember her singing a bit in it, but I'm not sure if that skit is cut out on comedy central or not. Just wanted to mention that since so many people seemed interested in this topic.
In the skit she sort of sang in a middle-to-somewhat-high-ish voice and it wasn't that impressive, but if she's playing June Carter Cash I imagine she's better at singing lower.

She could act it well.. don't know about the singing though! Reece is so lovely though she can play any role for me lol! I have to agree with whomever posted about Krisitn playing her ina film. She is getting more and more recognition... if she gets enough it'll be a safe bet for the producers. She is a "known" actress who can sing the role... publicity because she's origional etc. I still think if they make the film Allanis Morrisette could play Elphaba!
