Does anyone know of ANYWHERE in the lower 48 that is putting this on? I know a Boston company did it last year but I couldn't get there. I've always wanted to see it live and I can't find anywhere that is doing it.

Check out opera houses as well as musical theater companies. The former sometimes do it as a contrast to the sturm und drang of grand opera.

But if you can't find it with a google search, it probably isn't happening this year. It's a very demanding show to produce (and sing).

P.S. You aren't wrong that CANDIDE is almost always worth the visit, even though the book is difficult and the show doesn't always work. There is a DVD of a concert version starring Kristen Chenowith and Patti LuPone. If you haven't seen it, it's worth a look. Updated On: 7/24/12 at 06:49 PM

Perhaps the Boosey and Hawkes offices in New York can steer you toward any scheduled productions.

There's a few listed on the Candide page on mtishows.com.

Upcoming productions of the 1974 and 1999 versions are listed on MTI's (the licensing house's) website. The link below will take you to the page for the 1974 version. Simply click on the tab "Upcoming" near the middle of the page. The same can be done for the 1999 version, for which there does not seem to be any listings at this time.

I can't say that every production of CANDIDE is worth seeing. I recall a terribly lackluster performance given by the NYC Opera a few years ago. Parts of it were painful to endure.
