Which do you think was the best recorded version?

I still think the original Broadway cast album is the best -- maybe because that's the one I grew up with. It's one of the greatest overtures ever.

Absolutely the original. Overseen by Bernstein a the height of his powers. WHAT a great opening. What fantastic performance. And as overtures go, nothing starts a show off more rousingly, except perhaps Gypsy but they're apples and oranges.

The Overture on the original is great, but the Scottish Opera version is just as good. And that recording goes on to contain a few of the more interesting alternate Candide songs like "Ringaroundarosy," "We Are Women," "Words, Words, Words," "Nothing More Than This," and the original "Venice Gavotte".

Begin at the beginning and go on till you come to the end: then stop.
