re: Candle's Out: New Daphne Rubin-Vega interview

I should add that I really respect her as an artist and feel she contributed a lot to the documentary. I'm really sorry if she does feel bad about this whole thing.

As time goes on - people eventually always let their true feelings come out about a project - especially with a film like RENT that basically tanked. You are taught to really hype and promote your product, and at the time, you usually believe it, but with some perspective its easier to say - "Yeah, you know maybe that wasn't the right decision" etc.

I bet as time goes on, people like Anthony Rapp who was so defensive of the final film product will be a little more outspoken about what actually worked and what also didn't work.

I understand what you're saying too, insomniak. I just would hope that she could overcome that "betrayed" feeling and be happy for her (former?) friends, at least to some extent. Easier said than done, I suppose.

re: Anthony Rapp -- though he was very defensive of the final product as a whole, he *did* very readily admit things that he didn't think worked; he wasn't a PR machine.

SD, it's going the other way, it seems! Now she's more bitter than before! Or, just being more open about her bitterness...

I don't blame her for her. I know people think she's being immature and irrational, but anyone in the same situation as her would be feeling exactly the same way. They just wouldn't be as openly honest about it as she is.

Well, being "happy" for her friends is kind of a matter of opinion. The film was not a hit and isn't really doing anything for the OBC's film career. Maybe she's bitter that Chris Columbus was not able to make a film that was a bigger hit for Jonathan Larson's sake.

re: Candle's Out: New Daphne Rubin-Vega interview

I thought that too, MB. Daphne has been with this show since the beginning- just as long as Anthony has- and knows the show inside and out. Maybe she's also upset about the things in the movie that didn't work that the other cast members let Chris Columbus get away with and she thought they should have fought for.

Didn't this idea of "well, Columbus should've waited to make the movie so Daphne could be in it after her baby!!" come up at some point, or did I totally fabricate that?

I was referring to the initial response suggesting that she was perhaps bitter toward her OBC cast members for accepting their roles while knowing she wasn't going to be in it with them. Her happiness (or lack there of) regarding the finished product is another story, although we'll probably never know considering she claimed she hasn't seen the film.

re: Candle's Out: New Daphne Rubin-Vega interview

Has anybody heard/seen anything one way or the other with regard to Daphne's current relationship to the rest of the OBC, or is this pure speculation? Just curious. re: Candle's Out: New Daphne Rubin-Vega interview

re: Candle's Out: New Daphne Rubin-Vega interview

I find this somewhat interesting.

From Daphne's interview:
JC) What did you think of Rosario Dawson's performance and the film in general?
DRV) I have not seen the film.

From Patti LuPone's website Q&A section:
Did you ever watch the Evita movie and what did you think?
Patti Answers: No, I never saw the movie Evita.

re: Candle's Out: New Daphne Rubin-Vega interview

Well, it's usually smart in a PR standpoint to not see the film if you think you are going to be negative about it. She's saving herself (and her former castmates/friends)a lot of grief because you know everybody on earth has probably asked what she thought of the movie!

re: Candle's Out: New Daphne Rubin-Vega interview

I feel the speculation is now far outrunning what she actually said, which didn't refer at all to how well the film did or didn't do. And Emcee, there were those pictures of her hugging Adam after the Brilliant Mistake concert. Wouldn't it be strange for her to be okay then but at odds with him now?

re: Candle's Out: New Daphne Rubin-Vega interview

A lot of changes and cuts like the Halloween and Goodbye Love fight, were highly publicized, so she wouldn't necessarily had to have seen the movie to find out about it.

re: Candle's Out: New Daphne Rubin-Vega interview

I remember when EVITA was going into preproduction, LuPone was actually supportive of Madonna's casting but than later countered that with a bit of a negative comment that the show would be ruined because the music wasn't going to be sung in the original keys for the film.

Kind of an absurd statement IMO, especially because most movie musicals change the keys to make the music more "conversational" for the intimacy of film.

re: Candle's Out: New Daphne Rubin-Vega interview

Still, I'd hope she wasn't basing her opinion on the final product of the movie strictly upon hearing of two cuts. Even people who hated the movie can probably agree that one should see the movie before judging it.

re: Candle's Out: New Daphne Rubin-Vega interview

I really don't think she has bad relationships with the cast now because of this. In one of his recent Q&A's when asked who in the OBC/movie cast is he closest with, Anthony said Daphne.

And didn't some people spot her at the premiere party?

Wait, I'm confused. When did she say what her opinion of the final product was?

I agree with Chloe; that one comment doesn't warrant this much speculation about her "bitterness."

And she didn’t offer an opinion on the finished film; the interviewer did.

re: Candle's Out: New Daphne Rubin-Vega interview

timote, I think it's funny that as soon as I read that part of the interview, I also thought, "Patti? Is that you?"

I don't know. I love Daphne. Love, love, love her. And I couldn't have cared less if she didn't look 19 in the movie; frankly, she never looked 19 during the OBC days, but that doesn't stop her from being my favorite and most loved Mimi. And I say this as someone who really adored Rosario in the movie, so I'm not bitter about Daphne's exclusion.

However, I feel like Daphne has every right to be... well, whatever you want to call it--bitter, angry, annoyed, upset. All human emotions. The biggest person in the world would be hard-pressed to not be a little miffed at being passed over like that. And one thing I've always loved about Daphne is that she's honest, so if she's going to be outspoken about it, that's cool.

(I also think she might not have been as vitriolic as she came off in the interview. A bit of good-natured scathingness, if you'll allow the oxymoron.)

Also, she looks way gorgeous in those pics.
