About Johnny Depp,
I truly believe the man can play anything. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory exceeded my expectations to tremendously. IMDB's Sweeney message board has a thread regarding the casting and Sondheim has even confirmed that it will most likely happen.
Casting wise, I would like to see Patti LuPone LuPone as Mrs. Lovett. She won't attract the masses of people that a Glen Close or Meryl Streep would, but with Depp's marquee name, I'm sure it'd still make money without two movie giants.

Close and Streep are so fantastically inappropriate for the part - get a grip, people There are plenty of actresses who would be a better fit...Emma Thompson, Imelda Staunton, Toni Collette, Miranda Richardson maybe even H B-C (I've a feeling she has it in her), But please Close and Streep ::)
Ralph Fiennes and Barbra.
That is box-office dynamite.
nathan, it's BURNETT

Who is "Carol Burnette"?
Are we talking about Carol Burnett? If so, has she added an "e" to her name like Dionne Warwicke did back in the 70's when she was into numerology and thought she needed an extra letter in her name to help her record sales? Just wondering.
I am dying to see Cyndi Lauper as Lovett in either the film or the stage.
