DGrant, there is not a single decent theatre critic on the Left Coast. There is a syndrome, however: If a show comes from Broadway with either popular success or a modicum critical d'estime, they'll write it a good review when it arrives in LA. If it originates in LA? They don't know their elbows from their assets.

Veanne truly steals that show.
I totally agree though- Anika Nani Rose was given a tony over the entire superior supporting cast of that show.

I agree, I don't think Anika deserved the Tony as much as, say, Isabelle Keating. They gave it to her because they weren't giving it to Tonya. Just my two cents. Anyway, no one ask answered my original question. Is Tonya's voice holding up better on the West coast than it did in NYC?

Veuve - I'll take your word on the critics thing. I don't read reviews - or at least the opinion parts. I look them over to get an idea of a show, nothing more, nothing less. The only reason I knew about those I referrenced is because I looked them up out of curiosity after Rath's post.

Actually, I have to disagree with ya'll about Anika.
When I saw the show, I didn't know what to expect. Out comes Anika singin' about not caring that a white man got shot. That song and her performance made me wanna run up on stage (I was in the balcony, mind you) and give the girl a high-five! It is true that those words were not hers, but when she performed them, I believed them to be. THEN, at the end of the first act, she worked so well with those kids in that number. Again, I wanted to get up and dance right along with them. I wanted her to be my big sister.
Second Act - The party. How I felt for the poor girl when she got smacked in the face, as well as feeling her anger when she was arguing.
I was right along with that character, thanks to Anika. She made me feel.
Her performance quality blew me away. She had a stage presence that commanded attention.
That is why she won the award - Not because her role didn't break out into overdramatic effect, but because she (having less experience than those surrounding her) gave you a proffesional flawless performance.
I am so looking forward to seeing her in the future, as I will always have love for Anika, and all because of Caroline.

"Do you know what pledge time is, Andrew"? said the PBS Executive.
"Yes", Lloyd Webber replied. "My 50th birthday special must be one program that gets done a lot."
"No", mused the man from PBS heedlessy. "Not so much. Our Stephen Sondheim Carnegie Hall concert. That's a big one."
Spoons, forks and knives seemed suddenly to suspend their motion in horror, all around the table.

I saw the matinee show on 22nd and unfortunately, Tonya's voice was cracking badly. Too badly sometimes I couldn't catch the lyric, not because of the sound system b/c I could hear everybody else's voice just fine. Still, I thought the show itself was brilliant, I love the score (I haven't seen Modern Millie but I saw Violet and loved the score too).
Noah was performed by Benjamin Plat (sp?) and he was excellent! So were the other child actors too. I hope Tonya has a vocal rest today and come back to the show in 120% force!

Such an amazing show.
My brother-in-law lives in San Francisco and just saw it, probably to shut me up, cuz I've been raving about it for months, and cried three times.
This show is a mini-miracle.

I do not think Tonya's voice is holding up well at all-literally it sounds like she is hammering her vocal chords night after night and they are not happy. I mean there's nothing there when she tries to open up, so she just pushes harder. AHHH. Ordinarily I would expect some vocal fatigue from someone who has been with the show so long, but this was like hardcore vocal damage. I was with people who know nothing about singing and they all said it sounded like her voice was dead.
Oh well, she is still amazing and I love her.

"I guess she is one very confident girl who feels if you see it, it shall be.
I hope she sees a room with a piano player and a bunch of scary middle-aged queens sitting behind a table, talking to each other as she auditions!!"

I would assume that her voice is straining, given the demands of the role and her impeccable attendance record.

yea i loveee tonya's voice, i even like the cracks sometimes lol. i love the part when she flips out on dotty, when she says that stuff about her never being in achurch, etc. lol i love that. but when i saw it, she like cracked right away on the first song, so i dunno. her performance was just so amazing though. i remember being blown away by anika at the end of the show... her closing song or whatever it is.. she was just so good.. her voice was extremely strong, and her presence just incredible.. i really thought she was like 14 on that stage. i remember liking cox, but i thought she sounded kinda flat at times...still, i thought the character didnt require a beautiful voice, and i liked it.. however, chuck and anika were the ones who caught my attention in the supporting cast.. the moon had a beautiful voice, and i lovedddddddd the dryer as well. Dotty didn't do much for me, but it worked. MOON TRIO is the best!

What IS it about "I Hate The Bus"?
None of my friends who have heard Caroline can stop singing/ humming it, and neither can I.
I feel SO BLESSED I got to see the show in New York. It's a shame it didn't run for longer.
I wonder what Jeanine Tesori is up to...

"I Hate the Bus" is so great.
Gottabeme- are you talking about when she goes
"Seein as how you ain't never seen the inside of a church/i don't think you got perspective on what the gospel is"?
I love that part, too.
