re: Caroline or Change

How is Tonya's voice holding up in SF? I loved the show and loved her, but her voice, for some reason, wasn't holding up at all. Is it better, or is she still cracking all over?

Do a search -- there are literally DOZENS of interesting threads with opinions/stories about the show (even a few about the current west coast version).

I got to NY the day after it closed. I just got the cd as a gift last month, and I am still singing "I Hate The Bus" in my mom's Camry like I'm black and female(my car is decomposing in my garage). I'm a Polish white guy. I wish I had seen it.

Has the SF production started yet? I thought it started on the 16th, but that's from my bad memory.

re: Caroline or Change

Anika Noni Rose was the best thing to happen to Broadway since they closed Cats!
"Do you know what pledge time is, Andrew"? said the PBS Executive. "Yes", Lloyd Webber replied. "My 50th birthday special must be one program that gets done a lot." "No", mused the man from PBS heedlessy. "Not so much. Our Stephen Sondheim Carnegie Hall concert. That's a big one." Spoons, forks and knives seemed suddenly to suspend their motion in horror, all around the table.

I saw the touring cast in LA, and i thought it was wonderful. but i do feel like i would have been able to appreciate it even more than i already did if i knew the story beforehand.

re: Caroline or Change

The San Francisco Chronicle gave it a rave review:

"Smart, tender, tuneful, also cannily political, achingly personal and sharply funny, "Caroline" is a Best of Broadway offering that truly lives up to the series' name. It's George C. Wolfe's Public Theater production that moved to Broadway last spring, complete with most of the same cast (including Pinkins and Tony award-winning, American Conservatory Theater-trained Anika Noni Rose as her daughter). And it's a deeply moving, exhilarating example of the American musical at its best."

re: Caroline or Change

So...what do all these remarkable reviews say about the state of New York theatre.

Many of us here thought this to be one of the best shows to come along in a very long while. But the NY reviewers were lukewarm at best.

Why is it this show has to go to the left coast, the land of 'bankrupt Hollywood', to be appreciated??

Well, robbie, the good news is that at least WICKED will get the rave reviews it missed out on here when it gets to the West Coast.

re: Caroline or Change

Saw Caroline in SF at last Saturday's matinee, and loved it. It's very different, but trust me...that's a good thing. The cast is uniformly excellent, especially Tonya Pinkins. Her voice was clearly a little raspy, expecially in her "break," but it didn't matter. In fact, if anything, it worked FOR her.

My one question... As I said, the cast was uniformly excellent, including Anika Noni Rose. But can someone put into words what she did that was so amazing? I liked her, a lot, but nothing she did screamed "Tony" to me. In the end, I think I realized that I was letting myself get distracted from the context of the show just waiting for her to put me over the edge, but it never happened.

And speaking of Tony, Tonya was robbed. Robbed, I tell ya.

re: Caroline or Change

MYB, I saw the show after the Tonys, and felt the exact same way about Rose. Plus, I was sitting in the fourth row so when she came to my side of the stage, I could hear her natural unmiked voice, and it was clear it wouldn't have made it much farther than that 4th row without amplification - very weak voice. I was disappointed.

re: Caroline or Change

rose has a WEAK voice!?!? are u joking.. i remember thinking that her voice could give tonya a run for her money lol... but yea when i went i got chills... love her strong voice.. i really thought she was like 14 in the show too.. she deserved the tony, as well as tonya

re: Caroline or Change

Yes. Without the mic, weak and airy. No way could she ever give Pinkins a run for her money vocally.

I hate the bus, I want my own car. A car with a heater; want a TV set and more. A big old house, like this one, but everything new, where caint nobody ever, caint nobody ever, tell me what to do.

Anika is amazing. Tonya is spectacular. Imagine doing "Lot's Wife" every night.

re: Caroline or Change

Of the supporting actors, it wasn't Rose who blew me away- it was Veanne Cox, followed by Larry Keith and Chuck Cooper. But all around, that cast was amazingly strong.

re: Caroline or Change

On the recording, Cox comes off the best of the supporting actors. Harrison Chad is adorable too.

re: Caroline or Change

The adult supporting actors were all incredible singers - the washing machine, the moon, and the bus.

re: Caroline or Change

yea i saw it on sunday, january 16th and was utterly blown away by Anika noni rose and her talent, i can totally see why she got the tony. Tonya was amazing, I loved the whole cast, the day i saw it, Vanessa A. Jones was the understudy for the moon. She was really good, but i wanted to see Aisha de Haas perform in the role.

re: Caroline or Change

I am going to see the show on Sat matinee (1/22) but haven't gotten the tix. It's not sold out or anything but there is no discount! For Big River tix I didn't/don't bat an eyelash for $85 orchestra seat, but I don't know if I want to pay $90 orchestra for this show (I know, I know, it will be worth it).

I'm thinking front balcony or even rear balcony... Still I'm going to see it! If any of you are going and see a woman wearing Kimono that's me!

I think Chandra Wilson comes across beautifully on the CD, and she is a highlight in the live show.
Veanne is my woman.
I love(r) her.
