And I am still listening to it as I type this. It might just be the best cast recording I own.

I am really looking forward to getting this!
I was also amazed sitting in the theatre....but as I listen now my jaw keeps hitting the floor in awe. This is a masterpiece in every sense of the word.

first of all, i love theater that makes you think--that leaves you with something--that says something important...fluff like Millie is great & i'll admit that i like it, but hell, give me Assassins any day of the week....that having been said...
wow...perhaps i'm missing something...(and i'm fully aware that i'm opening myself up to many criticisms here, but...)...i've not seen the show, but was intrigued by it, so i picked up the CD at borders yesterday...it is produced incredibly well, looks attractive, big applause for the full libretto being included...the music is indeed intricate & interesting--i did find myself at times being wowed by Ms. Tesori's music (and at many more times being underwhelmed by Mr. Kushner's lyrics)...really fantastic vocal performances, from Ms. Pinkins, of course, but the real stand out to me was Ms. Rose...(WOW...hearing her sing "I Hate the Bus" almost made me forget "Lot's Wife" completely)...anyway, yes, the CD sounds great, but, and i'm not exactly sure how to say this but, it was a difficult listen. make any sense? as far as the story, i found it less than interesting...i didnt see Caroline as having much of a journey to make throughout the course of the play...certainly not enough of a journey to justify singing the glorious aria, "Lot's Wife." I found the characters of Rose, Noah, and particularly Emmie much more interesting. It's only my opinion, but i dont think the authors succeeded in telling the story that they intended to tell...or if they did, it's pretty pretentious...and we all know that an ounce of pretension is worth a pound of manure (says the poet laureate of dogwood lane)...Perhaps it is different seeing it in the theater, but simply judging by the recording, there's nothing (save Ms. Rose) that would make me want to see this show. Feel free to send me private messages flaming away and i'll try to explain my points a little better. :)
Just a random thought: when I first heard about it and saw a performance on TV, it didn't seem like one of those musicals that is sung through.
