When I was at the show in March Curtis hurt his back after opening the show in his regular role as Thalia. Right after "I'm Alive" Ryan Watkinson took over. Most people didn't even notice.

When I saw Drew Lachey in Rent, he left after the first act and his standby went on in the second act. He seemed fine in the first act, but it was noticeable that he had some kind of throat irritation or something. It was just a little awkward to see the new Mark because he was much taller than Drew. O well, things like that happen... it's live theatre!
Midact replacements make things interesting. I've seen several. It's amazing how many people don't notice, even if it's a main character and the replacement looks nothing like them.
If you think about it from their point of the view (the audience) it makes sense. I mean, they have no reason to be concerned, and probably wouldn't even consider the possibility of a replacement because they've never been exposed to that. If they have no reason to question it, then why question it?
Years ago I was at a matinee of THE GOODBYE GIRL and Bernadette Peters was out. Her understudy, Betsy Joslyn, went on. It was obvious that Joslyn was having trouble because she was missing notes in the songs and wasn't getting laughs. During intermission an announcement was made that Karen Hess would be taking over the role for the second act. Thus an "understudy" was replaced by an "alternate".
The only time that happened to me was during Larry Kramer's,"The Destiny of ME" off broadway. John Cameron Mitchell started it and then after intermission, his understudy took over. Very jarring mainly because John Cameron Mitchell is openly gay and played it campy and his understudy was straight and uncomfortable. Also, I think Betsy Joslyn always understudies Bernadette Peters. I saw Into The Woods and she understudied her for that too.
When I saw Movin' Out at the Richard Rodgers a few years back, Michael Cavanaugh did the first act and Wade Preston did the second act... a lot of audience members seemed to think that was the norm for the show...
