Thanks husk. I thought so. I was visiting a friend in 2004 who had it and told me it was out of print. he actually let me bring his copy back to Denver to burn and send back to him.
Wow. OBC of Merrily.. went out of print in recent memory? Crazy. I had no idea. I'm so happy to have gotten so many cast recordings with the money I made in high school. I remember finding out when all the Broadway Angel titles were going OOP and hunting them each down and snapping them up. I have many of the rare ones like Whoop-Up and Henry, Sweet Henry and will forever cherish them.
It pained me for so long that House of Flowers and Chicago went OOP on CD before I had a chance to get them. Now you will have them at bargain prices for decades most likely.
Actually all 4 of the Sondheim cast albums that were ultimately reissued by Masterworks Broaway had their original RCA editions discontinued. Problem was that the reissues got delayed several times and for a while there it was almost impossible to find new copies of SWEENEY, MERRILY, SUNDAY or WOODS.

Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!

To knock this back up, I'm just curious... is there a difference in terms of sound quality between the Capitol release of the OBCR of "Follies" and the Angel release, or are they both the same master?
Twin - The Sondheim reissues were announced to coincide with his 75th birthday in 2005, but kept getting delayed because of behind-the-scenes infighting as Sony and BMG were trying to merge, and eventually Sony just bought out BMG. The reissues came out in 2007 (2 years later) but for the better part of those 2 years the original editions were discontinued.
BDBD - The Ange reissue of FOLLIES is somewhat better than the Capitol edition but still spotlights the technical limitations caused by mic problems and malfunctions during the recording session. If nothing else the notes are better in the Broadway Angel release (but - frustratingly - does not include the detailed synopsis that was on an insert in the original Lp release.)

Merrily was OOP longer than just 2005. I remember searching for it for ages.
Yes, that is possible. Knowing that the remasters were being done, Sony/BMG probably did not restock these titles once the existing stock sold out. This has happened from time to time whenever any of the labels are planning on remastering and reissuing older catalog titles. The discs are not withdrawn from stores, but the title is notated not to have any additional copies made.
When a title is being completely withdrawn from the catalog a notice is sent to stores to recall all stock copies (if there are any).) This is done so stores can receive full credit for the discs. (Whatever copies are returned are drilled or sawed and sold off as "remainders" which turn up in discount bins.
