Here are some for starters:
You need "Oliver" Original Broadway Cast. Georgia Brown plays Nancy. Lionel Bart knew her when they were children and to some extent the role of Nancy was shaped to fit her. She has a beautifully husky voice and IMO nobody has ever done "As Long As He Needs Me" better than her.
"Sound of Music" Original Broadway
"Nunsense" off-Broadway cast just because it's a fun musical to have.
"Guys & Dolls" both Original and Revival(s)
"Bye Bye Birdie" Original Broadway Cast
"Ragtime" Original Broadway cast. A few too many power ballads, but it's worth having.
"Once On This Island" because it's beautiful music.
"Aspects of Love" I think it's one of ALW's under-rated shows.
Dorothy Loudon's solo album "Broadway Baby"
Ella Fitzgerald "The Cole Porter Songbook" and "The George Gershwin Songbook"
Alison Fraser solo album "New York Romance"
"Do Re Mi" either original or Nathan Lane Encores version
"A Day in Hollywood/A Night in the Ukraine"
"The Boyfriend"
Fame the Movie Soundtrack
"Dreamgirls" the Concert version. While Lillias White adds a few too many notes, it's more representative of the show than the Original Broadway Cast.
"Babes in Arms"
"Follies" 1998 New Jersey Cast
Mister Matt:
Not familiar with "All American". Besides Ray Bolger what does it have to recommend it?
An absolutely charming score by Charles Strouse and Lee Adams, book by Mel Brooks and endearing performances by Eileen Herlie and Anita Gillette. The song Once Upon a Time (one of Strouse's most beautiful ballads) has become something of a cabaret favorite and was recently performed on an episode of Boston Legal by Scott Bakula. It's one of those gem scores from a flop show like Goldilocks, I Had a Ball or Flora, and the Red Menace that a musical fan shouldn't be without. One of the staging elements the show is known for was the somewhat homoerotic choreography for the number Physical Fitness staged by Danny Daniels. I've only seen a few photos, but it looked pretty hot.
