Posted: 4/19/06 at 9:43amAccording to www.castalbumdb.com, this cast recording is available on CD. However, I checked amazon, ebay, footlight, and half.com but there have been no hits. Where can I buy this cast recording new or used? Thanks!

Posted: 4/19/06 at 10:40amIt occasionally pops up on ebay, but it has been out of print for around 15 years or so. Along with Woman of the Year, it is one of the most sought-after cast recordings on CD.

Yeah, this is a pretty pricey out-of-print cast recording. I lucked out an got a copy on Amazon marketplace several months ago, for 35 bucks (which is cheap). It usually goes for about 100 bucks.
It is worth it.
Keep checking Amazon:

Posted: 4/19/06 at 10:49amI put it on my wish list on amazon.com about a month or so ago. Yesterday, I got an email from amazon saying the cast recording was unavailable. I still have it on my wish list, but have increased the price I am willing to pay. Hopefully I won't have to pay more than $50.

Susan. Johnson.

Posted: 4/19/06 at 11:41amIt is a 1958 broadway musical that lasted only 56 performances. Sylvia Sims, Romo Vincent, Susan Johnson and Julienne Marie were in the cast. The music was written by Moose Charlap, who also wrote Kelly (which lasted one performance in 1965). Amazingly, the show did get an original cast recording. I'm a collector of musical flops, which is why this show really appeals to me. I wonder if the songs are any good...

The songs are great.
Susan Johnson is at her best here, and her solo "When the Tall Man Talks" is jaw-dropping good. It's a great score all around.

Posted: 4/19/06 at 11:54amI don't understand why it is so rare. Did they only make like 100 copies of this CD initially??? In the grand scheme of things, most people in the world are NOT looking to buy Whoop-Up so there should be a lot of extra copies of the CD lying around somewhere. Unless the initial number of copies made of this CD was so low, I don't understand why it is impossible to find.

Posted: 4/19/06 at 11:56amIt's too bad there is no recording (legal or otherwise) of Buttrio Square. I would have loved to hear Susan Johnson in that as well.

The "Whoop-Up" CD has really hysterical liner notes. The re-issue producer (John Yap) got drunk with a friend at dinner and decided that they should put all of the Whoop-Up cover recordings ever made on the CD as a joke, because they're so terrible. They ended up doing it on this CD, including an unbelievable Maurice Chevalier cover of a dreadful song called "Nobody Throw Those Bull".
Overall, "Whoop-Up" is highly listenable, thanks to tracks like Susan Johnson's "When the Tall Man Talks" and fun novelty numbers like "Love Eyes" and "Caress Me, Possess Me Perfume." The bonus tracks on the CD are fun too, with Connie Francis doing a sensational version of "Love Eyes", and the aforementioned Chevalier track has to be heard to be believed.
Definitely try to pick it up, it's a much better listen than most other rare flop recordings.

Posted: 4/19/06 at 1:48pmThanks, ITF! Right now, the only cast recording I was more than Whoop-Up is Raggedy Ann (and it unfortunately doesn't exist).

Oooh, Raggedy Ann! Do you know if this is available to watch at Lincoln Center?
If I could have one nonexistent cast recording in the world, it would probably be Marilyn!

Posted: 4/19/06 at 2:28pmIs this Whoop-Up the same one that the Smithsonian released decades ago? I think I have the reissue, if there was one. The Smithsonian Museum had a series of these early 'collectable' albums. I have to remember to get home and take a look! Sorry if I'm mistaken about this. The cover is totally different from the one shown on Amazon.

What happened was, Larry Lash was at Polydor at the time and had reissued some of the M-g-M cast albums they had inherited. A friend of his suggested - practically dared him - to put WHOOP UP out on cd and add the Maurice Chevalier single of "Nobody throw the bull" as a bonus.
M-g-M Records had made the cast album shortly after the musical premiered but when the show folded quickly, the Lp quickly went out of print. There were two issues, mono and stereo. The mono had the Overture while the stereo re-arranged the running order and dropped the Overture. By the 1980s $75 was the average price for a clean stereo copy.
Lash did an excellent remastering job (though he could only find mono takes for one of the songs) and filled out the CD with a half hour of bonus tracks from studio and pop artists recordings of songs from the show.
The CD was welcomed by collectors but hardly a big seller and Polydor is quick to delete anything that does not sell. It was gone in less than 2 years and while casette copies showed up in cut-out bins it seems that the unsold Cd's were recalled and possibly destroyed. In all there are probably less than 2,000 copies in circulation.
Write to Brian Druteman at Decca Broadway (they own the rights now) and see if they can re-press it. They would not have to re-master anything so possibly they could do a small run using the existing tapes.
It's not classic, but it is fun and Susan Johnson is a treat. Connie Francis take on "Love Eyes" is cute and rather sexy (for her.)
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

With ANKLES AWEIGH (released on CD a year ag and a must-get) WHOOP-UP is an irresitible cheeseball lollapalooza of a show. It's view of Native Americans ensures it will NEVER be revived and the liklihood of Brian Stokes Mitchell (or anybody) covering "The Best of What This County's Got" is non-existant. I wonder if even the Siegels would touch this number for any BROADWAY BY THE YEAR (If they did 1958 already, I haven't checked). It's a VERY funny number, introduced by Danny Meehan (who is best known today for his role as Eddie Ryan in FUNNY GIRL).
I paid $35 for the CD at least ten years ago.
A favorite "sin-along song" from the score is Susan Johnson's "Men". If you hear it once, you'll be quoting it for the rest of your life.
