The smiths in Streetcar
wolfwolf, why would you say that? A great number of men could pull off a great number of female roles in plays and musicals. I, for one, would love to play several female roles. I can't see how this is a casting "No No."
I agree with Edna...there are some shows that would be really fascinating/that I would love to see with people of the opposite sex playing the roles. I know it's not exactly a musical, but I saw Hansel and Gretel at the Met and the Witch was played by a man and it was very effective (and hilarious!). I would love to see a "gender bending" production of Sweeney Todd, I think it could work really well as long as there was enough coverage on all the parts.

I saw a production of Cabaret where the Emcee was played by a woman. The cross-dressing gag that opens Act 2 didn't work, and I think it just didn't work overall for that character. Though, the emcee was played as almost like a dominatrix, so that may have affected my point of view.
Any musical that does not star some combination of Hunter Foster, Jen Cody, Chris Sieber, Meredith Patterson, and Natascia Diaz in lead roles is a big no-no. Oh, and "Patty Lupone." Though, once she does that HBO show, she'll be dead to us.
Gina Gershon as Rose in Bye Bye Birdie... I was pretty much twitching everytime she wasn't on pitch... so it was just a twitch fest.
