Posted: 7/18/05 at 10:41pmIt's my understanding that the theater smelled so badly of cat piss that the show had to close temporarily, and by the time the place started smelling fresh again, everyone forgot about the show.

does that mean we have to suffer through another 17 years of WICKED? ugh...
CATS closed because ticket sales in early 2000 were not what they used to be. the original closing date was scheduled for June and had to be extended to September due to the influx of ticket buyers hoping to see the show one last time. it will always be a misunderstood masterpiece.

Posted: 7/19/05 at 10:24amTrust me buddy, I'd rather sit through 17 years of some being painted green, then someone being all creepy and with cat paint. I don't really hate the show i was just kidding btw, I jsut don't get how that could run that long. there's no heart in it.

it took a temporary break when officials began to investigate the plot. they found little evidence of one, called andrew lloyd webber in for questioning, and after much interrogating, found him to be guilty of writing the worst show known to man.
that is all.

I am fond of the theory that Cats ran for so long because it was so popular with foreign tourists. That would explain how it could run for 20 years despite the fact that no one you knew liked it. Also, you didn't need to be able to speak English to enjoy it; In fact, many theorized that NOT understanding the lyrics would enhance the experience.

Posted: 7/19/05 at 11:17amI agree with Joe. I would walk down Brodway past the Winter Garden and see busloads full of foreign tourists lining up to see 'Cats'. I was in Tokyo once, making small-talk with two Japanese businessmen at the next table. When they heard we were from NY, they both told us how much they loved 'Cats'. I smiled politely and kept drinking my sake.

People knock CATS a lot. No, it isn't brilliant theatre when it comes to book and music but then again it is. It is the longest running musical in Broadway history and that says something in and of its self. It also employed more people than any other show in Broadway history as well.
The show appealed to many different people. People who don't understand English that well or at all, kids, dancers, etc. Point me to a Sondheim show that can do that? (Not knocking Sondheim, I love his work)
I think if you go into the show with an appreciation for dance, a very simple story and hummable tunes you will be very entertained indeed. Also, don't sell it short. There actually are deeper under tones to the show than just that if you actually look for them. While I will be one of the first people to joke about CATS I will also be one of the first people to stand up for it.

(i know equity requires the understudys be announced and blah blah blah but how many average ppl would know which cat munkustrap is?)

Posted: 7/19/05 at 11:53amYes, they are announced. Equity dictates that. If you read your Playbill it is pretty evident who each character is by song listing. There are a few such as Coricopat, Tantomile, Victoria (everyone always calls her "The White Cat"), Sillabub, Pouncival, Tumblebrutus, Cassandra, Plato, etc., the list goes on that are harder to tell.

Posted: 7/19/05 at 2:08pmGee...from what we are saying about Cats...it isn't too much different from what is at the Winter Garden now? thin plot, pop songs, popular with tourists, entertaining to a large range of people, not having to speak english to enjoy it....
