Do they notify the theatre that they are seeing the show? Because it seems like everytime a celebrity is at a show, bway.com is there to take a picture of him/her.
Most of the time celebrities are given "house seats" so theatre management typically knows who's seeing the shows and when. This is also true with Tony Voters (some "celebs"), who receive those seats as well.
Well, I don't recall any photographers or such. But there was advance notice when Jeff Goldblum went to see "The Phantom of the Opera" while he was doing "The Pillowman" down the street.
I was chatting with Hugh Panaro before the show and he mentioned in passing that Jeff Goldblum was seeing the show that night. Later, on the way to the stage door to say good night to Hugh (we ended up in a three-way conversation with maggots, thanks to one of my friends), we passed Jeff in the alley since he was leaving that way.
When I ushered here in the Burgh, they typically let us know in advance, since they came in close to curtain, and we could get them to their seats just as the lights went down (less fuss from the audience that way).
The cast of Jersey Boys knew that Liza was going to be in the audience for the evening show of November 25th...Liza looked great by the way. (JLY didn't do the matinee to save his voice for Liza)
James Franco was at a the performance of Awake and Sing that i went to back in june. there werent any photogrpahers, and i dont think anyone really knew he was there.....well there werent any photographers if you dont count the hordes of teenage girls wetting thier pants for him and begging him for pictures during intermission. I apologize to James for that, had i not said hello to him as he passed me on line before the show, i dont think anyone would have noticed him. then again these are harmonal teenage girls we are talking about, so they may have found him regardless. but yeah anyway, it didnt seem as though anyone knew he was there. he stood on line like the rest of us, so im guessing managemnet may not have known he was there either, or im sure they would have brought him in right before curtain, or through another entrance.
Paul Newman with his family was a PJ Game when I went to see it, and the ushers recieved an advance notice, but he was seated about 15 minutes before the show actually started- with everyone else. He had a few people who came up to him to talk at intermission, and was very pleseant about it all.
A lot of times, notification is given to the house staff for security reasons and the like, as well.

Photographers show up when celebrities see Broadway shows because someone's publicist has alerted the press in advance.
Kevin Kline was at DRS when I went. there were no photographers.

Oprah and Gayle sat in the row behind me for TCP, night after opening. They snuck in and out, doubt there were paparazzi outside, but it was a light show INSIDE once everyone found out that Miss O was in the house.
when I saw PURPLE in previews, Oprah also attended. It was like a royal visit for that audience. The only other time I have felt such charisma and power overtake a crowd was around Clinton.
Nicole Kidman was at a matinee performance of The Pillowman that I was at last year, but there were no photographers. She came in just as the lights went down with what looked like 2 friends. By/at intermission I think a lot of the people in the theater knew that she was there but were respectful and didn't make too much of a fuss over it.

Yeah, our audience went berserk. People were bursting into flames, fainting, having multiple "O's" right there in the aisles.
So many 'Oprah Moments' it was insane.

Withoutatrace, huh? Do you know this for a fact, or is this simply your theory?
Sounds like a theory to me.

All of my encounters with celebrities at Broadway shows haven't had photographers. I saw Paul and Joanne at Seascape one day, with their friend Albee. No photographers.

When I saw "La Cage au Folie" Hugh Jackman & his wife were in my row. They ducked out at intermission, but in the theater no one seemed to bother them. After the show they dashed up front to see the orchestra leader, who was the same one he worked with during "The Boy from Oz". There were no photographers around.
