I think he's mostly done theatre, but I don't know of anyone that doesn't know who he is.

well, since i talk to folks out in the hinterlands on a regular basis (and no not just family) i did a completely unscientific survey of folks who are outside the main entertainment centers and found that none of them knew who nathan lane was. when i mentioned the bridcage they knew who hank azaria was before lane. it's not scientific, but i'd second the suggestion that broadway lovers make nathan out to be a lot more than he is.
