"It is, indeed, illegal in New York, and it has been for almost six years"
If that is the case then it is a law that is never enforced. If it were, the ushers would confiscate cell phones at the door and return them after the performance and there would not be an announcement asking people to turn them off or to set them on vibrate before the show.
I don't understand why people who are asked this at the beginning of practically every show to can't seem to just follow those simple instructions. They deserve to be escorted out of the theatre if their phone goes off during the performance.
I've carried my phone into many shows and I know to have it on vibrate.

Oh, what a nice thing for you to say, kookie.
I love you too--about as much as I'd love a bout with shingles.

This story is a lie.
It's just another one of the sockpuppets Dollyop makes up, like Brendan Stryker.

That picture took my breath away.
I still pine for the deceased Brendan Stryker.

I am under the impression that cell phones are illegal in the theatre only because even the basic cell phones out there has a camera attached to it. I have been in the theatre many times where people were making calls either before the show and during intermission and ushers weren't saying a word.
I do think that the original post isn't true because the actor went over the top a bit too much. Also it isn't against the law to have or to use a cell phone to make a call. It is however against the law to use a cell phone to record a show or take pictures.

The incident never happened.
This is the 2nd time in a month BroadwayWorld has spread false rumors about performers, the first being when another thread accused LuPone of similar bad behavior.
That thread was deleted under legal threat. The legal counsel of Actors Equity has been informed that there is a pattern of false and defamatory accusations against its members occurring regularly here on BroadwayWorld.
This thread--and the sockpuppet who created it--are being investigated by the appropriate authorities.
Criminal charges are being considered.

Posted: 11/24/08 at 12:35amWinston, if you ever actually read anything, you would see that it is NOT illegal to use your phone before the show or during intermission, and it IS illegal to receive a call during a performance, even if you do not answer. It is not just because of cameras. If your phone rings during a performance in a New York theater, you can legally be fined $50. I have never heard of this law being enforced, but it is there.
