I think we should trust Bill Condon and his talent. He's the genius behind the adapted "Chicago" screenplay. And (like Chicago) Dreamgirls has to work as a film, and changes will have to be made in order to do that. I do know that Dreamgirls has always been one of Bill's all-time favorite shows and a huge influence on him artistically. He's been pushing for years to do a film of it. His script and direction will be a genuine labor of love, and he will work very hard to do the source material justice.
After listening to the complete recording again, I think that several sections of the "sung through" music could be easily replaced with dramatic dialogue. Not all of these passages would work better as dialogue, however (particularly "It's All Over" at the end of Act I).
As far as the six new songs, I'm guessing this has more to do with DreamWorks and David Geffen wanting to sell records. Not that this is such a bad thing, either. I would look for new pop songs for the Dreams to sing that could be released as singles. I wouldn't worry too much about "And I'm Telling You...", "Dreamgirls," "I Am Changing" and "One Night Only" going away... but songs like "Heavy" or the opening Vegas hit medley in Act II could easily be swapped with new, chart-ready replacements.
I'm anxious to see the film and judge it on its own terms. I think Bill will do an incredible job.
I still think Countess Vaughn would be Amazing. She played Kim in the Parkers on TV. A star search winner from days gone by, but what a voice. WOW.

I'm still not happy with the changing of the story or them adding six new songs. If Bill adds six new songs they can't be just for singles release because every song in Dreamgirls is an essential part of the story. Even such small songs as Vouge Sequence and I Miss You Old Freind. I just hope this comes out correct and something I like.
I love that show! She can sing? I did not know that!
Thank GOD! Someone who makes SENSE! Welcome aboard best12bars!

Exactly- Condon's no hack, and Knowles is great casting for Deena. I'm staying optimistic until I'm given reasons to worry, rather than the other way around.

Ok I'm coming to terms with the new songs and like most people I do agree Bill Condon knows what he's doing. I also do believe one of the new songs will be Beyonce's and i'm totally fine with that. I just hope that they add a song for Michelle.
