Damn,
I was really hoping for a completely new score. I find most of the music from the 1971 movie far too cutesy for my taste.

BTW they were doing readings of James and The Giant Peach this week.
AEA, check this out. It's from a few years ago now, but Andrea's "non-belt" voice is great. Her second song here is a (mostly) non-belt version of "Tomorrow."
Please ignore the Japanese subtitles, unless of course they help you.

Thanks for that link, best12. That works to convince me that her take on Mrs. Bucket and "Cheer Up, Charlie" would be one I would be interested in seeing.
You're welcome, AEA. I also think there would be an extra "retro dynamic" of having the original Orphan Annie, all grown up, singing that hopeful song to her son.
And I hope this isn't taken the wrong way, but McArdle has a bit of a hard edge to her physically. I think this works perfectly for the character of Mrs. Bucket. Someone who has had to work her fingers to the bone for years to put "cabbage water" on the table for her family.

I totally get what you mean about her look and think it is a perfect description for the physical appearance of Mrs. Bucket. Especially if they keep Mr. Bucket out of the picture as they did for the Wilder version.

I'd rather the musical be mostly based on the book rather the two films, I think if they are retaining any songs from the Wilder Version it should be Pure Imagination, Candy Man and perhaps I Want it Now and drop the rest.

If they do Phantom Tollbooth, I may have to take up residence in the audience!
Who do you get for the Oompa Loompas? There must be some great "short of stature" actors available.
Most of the Munchkins are dead, and any survivors aren't going to be able to do 8 shows/week.
Joel Gray isn't busy, Dudley Moore?
Joe Pesci might make an awesome Oompa Loompa.
Daniel Radcliffe is short, isn't he? I doubt Tom Cruise would do this, though. Can he even sing?

Hmm, what Broadway actress (and notorious favorite around here) is only 4'10" and usually a bright shade of orange?
She's too operatic for an Oompa Loompa...

Is that Fred Armisen as Cuddles as Junie B Jones?
