Out of the context of the show, Anthony's lyrics are pretty creepy:
Do they think that walls can hide you?
Even now I'm at your window.
I am in the dark beside you.
uhhh, even IN the context of the show they are creepy.

In Anthony's? I always thought they were really sweet, such as they are in the show. But if you just read them, they're as creepy as the Judge's "Johanna."
Yeah they are purposely creepy. In the liner notes of the revival cd, someone (i forget who) mentions that the obsession Anthony has for Johanna is, in reality, only slightly less perverted than that of Judge Turpin. The song was no doubt written with this in mind.

Hmmm, interesting! This makes Johanna and Anthony much more interesting. They weren't the most fascinating characters in the play to me. I'm going to have to reevaluate my view! (And reread the liner notes for the revival.)
