The Sound of Music isn't supposed to be what happened in real life. That's the point of a musical. It would have been slightly hard to make the real story into a musical. I don't think adapting the story to work for the stage in particular makes it cheesy. Whether the show itself is cheesy or not, that's a different story.

Hey, Candleshoe2!! LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS is not cheese!!!!!
(Okay, maybe it is... a little. But I love it. And I get emotional at the end... therefore, it is not cheese. LOL)

I can't stand SOUNd of Music!
I can't believe no one's said Oklahoma! yet. Sure it's a classic, but....
and the accents don't help
DAMES AT SEA, lord help me when i saw that i almost walked out. if i saw one more happy face dancing tap numbers i thought i would be sick.
The thing with cheese is that cheese is funny. I htink a lot of the musicals from like the 20s- 60's are cheesy just because thats the style of the time. I think Zanna, Dont! is incredibly cheesy but i still find it hilarious.
It's good to laugh every now and then
I have actually just started getting into happy musicals lol...before I was all about the depressing ones where people die or there is no happy ending like Jekyll and Hyde or Les Miz or Bare. But then Last august I saw Hairspray and I walked out and i was like OMG i just saw a musical with a happy ending...and I LIKED IT!!! Lol.

I don't think you can consider a musical cheesy in which almost all the main characters die(Little Shop of Horrors). Just my opinion.
DAMN YANKEES = Kill meee
i was in a production of it & it was all major cheeseness
"I made it? Oh God! Oh God! How can I ever thank you?"
maybe it was just the people that were in it but I think it is the epitome of a cheesy show
<3 darren
Reefer madness was intentionally cheesy...does that count?

ashley - yes, it would be really hard to put the original story on stage, but i also think it shouldn't be promoted as the story of the VonTrapps so much when it really isn't. They hate it, they thought the story was going to be more realistic.

I have to say the cheesiest fest I ever saw (AND LIKED) was Saturday Night Fever
"I caiinnn't saaiiyyy no!"
Cheesy? Never!
The Sound of Music is not only cheesy, kitschy but also very untrue. A friend of my mother's used to work at the Trapp Family Lodge. Apparently Maria was a real bitch.
Bye Bye Birdie is cheesy, but that's why it's fun. Same with most of these shows. What about Nunsense?

Most musicals have cheesy aspects. Come on, the whole idea of suddenly breaking into song is cheesy, but I'm with MissElphie, I LOVE CHEESE.
