I work on Doubt. I'm there 6 nights a week--every week.
And may I repeat that the audience did not boo or groan--they laughed and cheered and applauded her. And their reaction at the stage door was supportive and jovial and in awe at getting to see a unique moment.
popcultureboy,I saw Cherry Jones in Doubt flawlessly. I adore her talent as much as you do. But I understand the frustration of the audience who didn't have my luck and won't blame his complain in this thread. Actor can make mistakes. Audience can feel bad about it. Both are natural.
damn that titanic ship for forgetting to sink when I saw it!!!
how unprofessional.
jrb, see, that is the difference. You work with them, you know the show so well, you are friend of the performer. Your opinion comes from a person of show business. My opinion from an audience. We view things differently.

Hey JRB_Actor,
Thank you for shedding some intelligent light on this situation. BTW, what do you do at the theatre?
It's too bad there aren't any songs in Doubt. If there were, Cherry could flub all she wanted and people would report on here about how cute and funny it was.
Well, I guess I can say as it's been outted on the board a few times lol. I'm the evening backstage doorman.
Sanda--while I fully admit my closeness to the situation might make me jaded. And, the fact that I will CUT ANYONE WHO SAYS AN ILL WORD ABOUT CHERRY JONES! I also am an audience member at times in life, too, and being in the biz, am even more critical perhaps. I have experienced these kinds of things as an audience member--and I'm WITH the actors. Not indignant that I didn't get "perfection".
In closing..lol....
A true artist works for his or her own approval, not for the masses with dollars in their pockets.
Really? I thought all you actors were onstage to get the love and validation your mothers so ruthlessly withheld. (Yes, i've seen Gypsy.)
jrb, that is fine. I kudos your tolerance and passion for theatre. I saw good shows with accident as well and didn't complain too much. I did feel angry when I saw some shows stupid and awful even though there was no accident. But I understand other person's complaining and don't think they are simply mean or rude.
And please don't cut me. I never ever say one bad word about Ms.Jones. It is an honor for me to view such a powerful performance of her and even talk to her after the show. She is super kind, so are others.

Lol I love that you mentioned Titanic Pippin, I saw it the first night of previews when I was about 12 or so, and I remember how cool I thought it was that they stopped the show for about 20 minutes to fix the darn thing. It was so exciting. Afterwards the cast picked up right where they left off...it didn't ruin my time.
Jeepers, one of the theater's best actresses goes up on one scene, then quickly fixes it and it ruins your time? My goodness!
I guess I'm the opposite of some of you guys. I would have LOVED to have been there when this happens, I love it. That's the glory of stage acting!
remember, on stage, a mistake is a gift from the gods, not a reason to gripe.
I would have loved to see one of the shows when the ship didn't sink, Buffy. when I saw it and it went off without a hitch, i kind of felt ripped off....
mother's approval, yes..... tired, hungry, noisy, Desperate Housewife watchin' candy wrapper crunchers, NO!!!!...
I was doing a stock production of Annie and when Annie came down the staircase for the final scene, the elastic snapped in the bottom part of the red dress, and she fled, sans skirt behind Daddy's big leather armchair, and refused to come out until after curtain. First of all, NONE of you would have asked for a refund for that one (probably would have thrown money) and 2. What is it with Daddy's and leather???
All this talk about unplanned events reminds me again of the Ethel Merman story Stritch told in At Liberty--to me, that is the essence of theatre--that anything can happen, and in those rare moments when anything DOES happen, I hope I'm there to see it next time!
