Child Actors on Broadway (or elsewhere)

The boy who plays the usher in Chaplin (who sings like a couple of verses) is probably the most embarrassingly awful thing I've ever witnessed on a Broadway stage.

I thought that both Sami Gayle and Emma Rowley (and, to a slightly lesser extent, Katie Micha) were wonderful as Baby June and Louise in the most recent Gypsy revival.

When I see the phrase "the ____ estate", I imagine a vast mansion in the country full of monocled men and high-collared women receiving letters about productions across the country and doing spit-takes at whatever they contain. -Kad

I was about to mention that Emma Rowley and Sami Gayle were both wonderful in Gypsy. I also thought Kelsey Fowler and Sarah Hyland (although the latter was a teenager at the time) were very good in Grey Gardens. I think it helps when the kids are doing shows that are a little more sophisticated and surrounded by adult actors who are at the top of their game.

I thought both Fredrickas in ALNM were fantastic, as well.

"These are kids you're talking about. You could stand to be a little kinder."
Yes, but they (or let's face it, their parents) chose a profession in which they have to deal with rejection and criticism constantly.

Yes, I saw both the girls who played Fredrika in A Little Night Music and they were both wonderful.

I love the kid who plays young Clyde on the recording of B&C. His voice is a powerhouse.

JohnyBroadway, that would be Talon Ackerman. Talon was also featured in "Leap of Faith." While his role in "Leap" was a much bigger part, I think he sounded a little old by then - his boy soprano was cracking. I've heard many people say that he was holding on to his high notes, trying to keep them from cracking, and did not always succeed, poor guy. His voice on the "Bonnie and Clyde" recording is wonderful though. Glad they were able to capture his voice from that time.

I saw Peter Mazurowski twice as Billy in BILLY ELLIOT and thought he was outstanding in the acting department. He was also a spectacularly knockout dancer. He lacked a bit in the vocals department, particularly on "Electricity," which was decidedly nasal and pitchy, but he was 13 at the time, so that could have been hormones. Anyway, he was impressive.

themysteriousgrowl, I always thought Peter had a naturally nasal voice - you could somewhat detect it in his speaking voice, but his singing voice just sounded like that all the time. He stayed in the role until the show closed and by then I believe he was 15. He didn't sound all that different between his first month of performances (the first time I saw him) and closing night (the last time I saw him).

On that note, I was going to say earlier that the vast majority of the children in BILLY ELLIOT had obvious gifts as performers with a certain few standing out as excellent actors. Peter was one of them. I also thought that Tade Biesinger was an excellent actor - so tiny but so full of emotion and expression, both facially and physically. Michael Dameski was also an excellent acting Billy, who displayed rage and frustration but also cried, had a lot of attitude, and wonderful smiles. Lilla Crawford (soon to be "Annie") and Georgi James were both excellent as "Debbie," full of sass and wit, though I found Lilla to be slightly more "hammy" than Georgi.

JohnBroadway, I can't believe I forgot Giuseppe. He's another of my favorites.

I'd also like to add that David Bologna was a perfect, wonderful Michael. I saw him a few times and never felt like he was too hammy. As the run went on, I felt like the Michaels got more and more toward the hammy side, playing for laughs. Michael isn't just a boy who gets laughs, and David let you see how much heart there was in the character too. Another great Michael was Jake Schwenke.

I though the kid who was in Leap of Faith in Los Angeles, Nicholas Barasch, was really good. one of the best kid actors I've ever seen. Unfortunetly he didn't make it to broadway (probably aged out.)
