When a new show is devised, how do the roles of the artistic elements of the show get chosen?
Do these people have to do a storyboard or present work and the best person is then chosen, or do people tend to work with people they have before, or those who've won accolades for previous productions?

Designers have agents who try to get them work, but generally speaking, a director will choose who s/he collaborates with either based on previous working relationship or general knowledge of the designers' work.

Often, those relationships begin at the regional level, too.

These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.
