CBS has posted video of Christine Ebersole's appearance on THE EARLY SHOW.
yesterday their messageboards were fired up by people who were offended because she uses the phrase "goddamn"
Christine Ebersole on THE EARLY SHOW
Geez, didn't know that Christine's amazing performance would be met with such utter ignorance.
It's artistic, for crying out loud. I'm particularly angry at the person who called Christine a "lady" (in quotes-meaning-she's no lady). I've met this classy actress and let me just say she doesn't walk around talking like her characters. She does have children, for pete's sake. I can't believe the vehemence with which she has been critiqued on this website. Hardly anyone posted anything in her defense. She is a lady in the truest sense of the word-she was the only person to come out the stage door to meet fans one time when I saw GG. She gives everyone an autograph who wants one and is polite, unpretentious, and completely deserving of every accolade she has received. (She is amazing in this show and better win the Tony.)
For middle America or those offended by her use of GD-get over it, people. It was "pretend". I hear far worse on the streets and in music and other TV programming-including prime time, when kids do watch.
And don't take it out on the brilliant Christine Ebersole.

Well said bwaygal1.
Edit: Did she sing Around The World (The video clip isn't working)?

She did sing around the world, though her harsh Little Edie voice is barely there.
That is a direct quote from the film, put into the song. I love how she's getting blame for it, as if she wrote the goddamn thing.
Thanks, Neddy. (I love GG, can you tell?!) I do get frusterated with people who show a lack of tolerance for artistic liberties. (good thing she didn't do "Hominy Grits".)
Whoever said she wasn't using the harsh Edie voice-2 reasons she probably didn't-1. She had that mike and might have really overblown it and sounded ridiculous. 2. Preserving her voice no doubt (or trying to keep from further alienating would-be audiences? It could come across as a little scary.) Anyway, I knew this artistic website would be totally supportive of what she sang. (We're all artsy types here anyway.)
Sadly, those who complain about bad language probably wouldn't blink an eye at a parody of a minstrel show.
it's completely CBS' fault that it wasn't bleeped on the east coast. and they had every opportunity to ask if the word could be changed. fortunately for CBS, it's not ne of the forbidden 7 words, so the FCC can't go after them.
but for people to not get that she was performing when she said it shows the sad abundance of ignorance in this country.
and, yes, Ms. Ebersole is a wonderful person who is very lovely.
everytime i see her sing it just sends goosebumps up my back. such a talented star!

I can't believe people would say those things about her. It's really sad that people don't get that she was just singing as her character in the Grey Gardens. If they decide that they don't want to see a really good show based on one word, it's their loss that they're missing out on a stunningly beautiful performance.
It's entertaining to read those comments posted on CBS just to see how stupid people can be, though.
Well, some god damn people are just god damn ignorant.
Finally got the video to work. What a beautiful performance. I adore that song. If these assholes can only focus on the 2 goddamn's in that song instead of the beauty and depth of Ebersole and the score, they need to question their taste factor. What a deep, human actress in a role based on a truly unique and wonderful woman. For a show that is about being true to yourself and not letting society decide how you live your life, I find it funny that this performance is being met with such stupidy by those watching it. Wow.

I realize I am bumping a pretty old thread, but I was searching old GG stuff (you can curse Sunday morning boredom for that), and I felt the need to show how "shocked and appalled" I am by all these ridiculous comments. And someone has the gall to say that it shouldn't even be in the show. Oh, my. I hope she doesn't see RENT or Spring Awakening any time soon. It saddens me that people can't look past the two little words to see the much larger picture of this beautiful song and performance.
I am offended by the fact that they're offended.
The comments some people left are ridiculous.
I do love this song though. It got me interested in GG (that, and "Revolutionary Costume").

bwaygirl1, I think it's funny that you feel the need to defend Christine by stating that she doesn't go around talking like her characters, as if, if she DID go around saying "goddamn" in her everyday encounters, that would peg her as a bad person.
I'm guessing that's not what you meant.

I also thought you didn't meet her until March, the same night my friend and I (we're the youtube/Road To Grey Gardens girls) did.
Apologies if I have you confused with someone else.
Can you imagine if she actually DID sing "Hominy Grits", BwayGal? LOL
Oh, these red state people need to find something better to occupy their lives...
Wrong person, Ms. Vanessi. I met her before that.
