Why is it when people don't like certain shows, they become bitter?
It's not like Mef auditioned for Spamalot and didn't get Curry's role.

Can we please stop the SpamAlot bashing? I mean if you don't like Spam, that's fine, but don't whine about it(nobody likes talking to an ambulance). There are people who ENJOY SpamAlot, there are people who WANT to see it more than once, and there are people who GO just because it's MONTY PYTHON, not because of the headliners.
I've said it before in other posts and I'm saying it again. Lighten Up people, it's harmless fun, and if you can't find it funny, fine but don't go calling it a piece of garbage or a complete waste of time.

All opinions are fare game on this board.
There are shows I love that I have seen torn to shreads here. I had to sit thorugh a "Follies Sucks" argument once. Honestly, positive opinions are just as valid as more critical ones.
Lot's of people love Spamalot sure, but you need to face the fact that a lot of people find large flaws in the piece, and are entitled to their opinions.

Is Chuck Wagner still enormeous?? LAst time I saw him he was way more Beast than Beauty!
I last saw Chuck in ANYONE CAN WHISTLE in Philly this past January, and yes he remains a large man with a large voice and large stage presence. His BEAST transformation was maybe a bit ridiculous, but no more ridiculous than Jeff McCarthy turning into the handsome young prince during the whole Christy Carlson Romano unpleasantness (who looked like she could be his granddaughter)

If someone would care to point out where I have *ever* said those who don't care for SPAMALOT are not entitled to their opinion, or are not entitled to post it, go right ahead. It's possible to express dislike of a show without resorting to "it sucks," "it's crap" and "it's garbage" comments that show no respect for either those who have put a lot of themselves into staging the show, or for those who enjoy it. I seem to recall people here expressing an awful lot of distress because someone *on another site* DARED to criticize LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA in terms they didn't care for, saying it would have been acceptable to not like the show, but not acceptable to express that dislike in disrespectful terms. Apparently that perfectly reasonable standard only applies to *some* shows.
And if calling a show "crap" in apparent response to a note expressing disappointment at that kind of comment is "taking the high road," I guess I'll just wallow in the gutter, thank you very much.
Well, in terms of Broadway musicals, it is kind of a load of crap...
Type away.
Hehe you make it too easy darling!
If you are using the standard form of musical theatre analysis, Spamalot comes off as a lazy work. Sure, you can enjoy it for what it is, but really, does everyone have to be on the same level as everyone else?
I have tickets for January, anticipating Hank's return. Very sad to hear David will likely not re-sign, but hoping they will get some top-notch replacements.

I wouldn't want to tax you too much, sweetheart.

I will freely admit I am a member of the Great Unwashed, and am not privy to "the standard form of musical theatre analysis," whatever that may be - so I cannot debate you on that level, nor am I interested in doing so. I can, however, toss your question right back at you...*does* everyone have to be on the same level as everyone else? In this instance, we have a show that has received reasonably favorable reviews from critics, recognition from the theatre community, and overwhelmingly strong sales (certainly accompanied by enough positive word-of-mouth to continue spurring those sales). Why does none of that "count" as value? It seems to me that on a great many important levels, the show is a success. To call it "crap" does not strike me as the epitome of thoughtful analysis.
I've said it over and over, and will say it once more. I don't mind if people don't like the show. I don't even mind if they post to that effect. I just find it sad when that dislike is posted in such unnecessarily virulent terms.
I loved Spamalot---it suits me to laugh my head off at silliness, and (while I would have liked to have seen Tim) I thoroughly enjoyed John Bolton! I am sorry to hear that David probably won't re-sign---he was wonderful. And I don't care if someone wants to bash Spamalot---someone will bash the show you're fondest of, and you'll get yours!
ok, i'm going to say thins again. Most people going are Monty Python fans and one reason why they are seeing it is because they want to see how someone could create a musical from one of the biggest cult films in the world. And which is why it also won the Tony cause it seems like it was impossible but it worked.
Now, I love Holy Grail, but the musical was ok. Not as good as Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. Also, it's on Broadway to give the audience a chance to leave their life and have fun for a few hours. If people go thinking it is philisophical (no idea why they would think that), yes, they would probably not like it.
ok, sorry, end of my ranting.
Chuck will always be a big, beefy guy. He's lost some weight and looks pretty darn good for approaching mid life. But he's still is in excellent vocal form.
Why wouldn't he want to have a Tony nom. show on his bio.? While J&H may not have been the love of your life, can I tell you the popularity that was generated for Chuck when he agreed to do the Bd'w tour. He gained a huge loyal fanbase and access to other open doors.
I know he mentioned coming to NY for some auditions recently. I will call or e-mail him to see what he will share about this.
He's been recovering/rebuilding from a partially destroyed home in Pennsicola from the last hurricane. But always the die hard theater actor! Maybe he'll show up here and answer for himself.

This whole thread brings up an interesting point. The internet, message boards, chat rooms, etc. They all offer an anonimity that people really take advantage of. Because no one knows who you are, and you don't have to look the person in the eye, that serves as a justification to have conversation with absolutely no manners, and no consideration for others. I guarantee you, if we were all sitting in the same room having this conversation, we might express the same opinioins, but we would all do it far more politely. I think it is unfortunate that we have all gotten in the habit of expressing our ideas and opinions so bluntly on the internet, that we resort to arguments and insults, instead of interesting conversation that makes you think and expand your mind. We rip peformers and shows to shreads in such a mean way, we would be mortified if the people who are behind those projects overheard our words. We would never say those things to their face, or to their friends. It's really easy to hide behind the anonimity of a message board, and in turn, become really ugly in your demeanor. It's almost like people get a sick pleasure out of saying mean things. Folks, if you'd just attempt to be a little more polite, you might be surprised how much more productive these little sessions could be. As soon as negativity enters the conversation, both sides close themselves off, and we are reduced to argument. Maybe that's what some are looking for. But I, personally, like to get on these boards and discuss and learn about what we all love. Being right is a lot less important than you think it is. Keep your opinioins by all means, I wouldn't have it any other way. Please share them. It would be boring if we all agreed on everything. But try to at least be civil about the way you say things. Remember you are dealing with people on the other end of the board. We're not just typed words on a computer screen. Performers do read what is written about them, and folks who post do read what you say. Nothing in life, and I mean NOTHING, can be described so simply as "It's the best" or "It sucks". There's always more to it. Nothing is that cut and dry. Everything has a complicated mix of elements that can be seen from a million perspectives. Trying to see new perspectives is generally a good thing.
I'm not saying you should love Spamalot. If it's not your thing, that's great. Let's hear about it. But being entitled to your opinion doesn't justify being rude to people who might like the show. By insulting the show so bluntly, you indirectly insult the person who likes it. You are indirectly saying that they have really bad taste. Think about that. Just take the edge off a little, will ya?
