Cinderella

In Boston last week (see my "Thrill Me" posting elsewhere) and their PBS station broadcast the "Cinderella" which was broadcast live on TV in 1957 (ah, the golden age), featuring a beautiful Rodgers and Hammerstein score, with Julie Andrews, John Cypher, Kaye Ballard and Alice Ghostly hysterical as the stepsisters. It was just amazing--does everyone else know about this and you've been holding out on me?

PBS ain't nothin' without Midge Woolsey, though. God, I love NYC.

The PBS here in DC aired it about a month ago. I loved it. Julie Andrews was adorable!

I'm doing Cinderella this year for my junior service project at a local grade school...I taped it to show them..I loved it!

Was that a fat joke?

I loved seeing it, I have had the cd for years. However, I must say I was shocked that Rodgers and Hammerstein allowed a work of theirs to be done with such an embarassingly awful "book."

The book was improved in the Leslie Anne Warren version and I think was even better in the Brandy version.

I love the score to CINDERELLA, but that original book for the tv musical is an embarassment to musical lovers!

Bad book. BAAAAAAAAAAAD book. Score's good... most of it. "I want the wine of my country...I want to wine of my county... I want the wine of my country. The wine of my country is...beer!" Yeah, that was bad.

ah - WISHIHADATONY strikes again with his (or her) insipidly ridiculous pronouncements of what is and isn't good.

now I have a good reason to block you.

wow that block user feaure is wonderful and long overdue!

Obviously I blocked that redhotguyinnyc2 and I guess we should hope he gets some kinda help. Either way, I am delighted that this site now has this block feature to help shield us from the crazies and abusers!

p.s. in the thread months back when Cinderella with Julie Andrews was first being reaired, many posters discussed their shock at the quality of the musical's "book."

It is wonderful the book has been improved on in subsequent versions.

i was in this play and i have to say that i find the brand version absolutely incredible. i think the book is fine for a fairy tale and the score is perfectly serviceable

Odd, but I find the original "book" the best of the three. The second one was just boring, beyond words, and the third was a mess. The original is available on DVD.

I've seen all three and I like all three (though not for the same reasons). It's a cute show.
