Watching the Golden Globes - City of Stars just won best song. Did Justin Hurwitz not write the songs music? The way the Evan Hansen guys accepted it was as if he had nothing to do with it.

maybe because he just accepted the award for Best Score, so he felt the lyricists could give thanks. He wrote the music.

In movies the score usually means all the music - underscoring as well as songs. In La La Land there weren't that many songs with lyrics. It didn't feel like a Broadway score where both are wedded and the underscoring is a riff on the score. Here it felt like the score - the underscoring - took precedent over the songs.

I beg to differ that LaLa Land did not have many songs with lyrics. There are several, most of them much better than City of Lights. Audition, Another Day of Sun, Someone in the Crowd are very good songs with great lyrics.

La La Land includes 7 songs with lyrics which is on par with, say, most Disney film musicals.
in addition, 15 tracks on the "score" soundtrack are "riffs" on the songs (including melodies from the individual songs; each song melody appears in the orchestral score other than Start a Fire).
