Having actually watched the Tony's this year because I had my first ever trip to NY in May, so I was excited to really feel a part of the show (saw 6 shows in 5 days, including Dolly, DEH, and Little Foxes).

I felt like all of the performances were a let down in different ways. Radio City's stage is just soooo big. Broadway stages are so small and intimate. To me it seemed like Platt was running a marathon moving around on that big stage; all but being swallowed up by the massive stage. The War Paint duet was the same way for me. As were just about all of the performances.

Keeping in mind all the talk about the musical performances being the one documentation of each show that lives on for years to come, I would actually prefer it if all the musicals performed from their own stage. That would give us all the truest picture of how the show is.

I feel like DEH's performance on the today show was more powerful with them just standing there than the Tony performance was.

Am I in the minority?

That precedent, friends, was set long, long ago. Starlight Express performed remotely from its theater and it is hardly a one-off example. Rudin, like him or hate him, made a judgment call and while everyone loves to hate him, the fact is the jerk producers to the Tonys could have done it easily. But they are all about crass, which is why the show is held in that behemoth Radio City, where it has no business being, but, you know, they can accommodate all those paying,screaming teens up in the skies there and they can also load it with paid screamers, which they do. I blame no one but the network and producers of the show - they simply don't know what they're doing and each year it gets worse and worse. When the Tonys were produced by people, you know, you understood and knew Broadway, when they were broadcast from, you know, Broadway theaters, they were better. The celebrated what should have been celebrated. They found time for all the musical numbers, an occasional tribute number AND to have all categories presented on air.
