re: Cloris Leachman - Young Frankenstein

Cloris Leachman wasn't asked back to do Young Frankenstein. Like many instances, she wasn't hired back after the readings. Doesn't mean she wasn't good, just not what they were looking for.

This was fascinating news -- when I read it in Smith's column A MONTH AGO.

Margo, I hear they replaced the lead in "Thoroughly Modern Millie" with some unknown girl named Sutton Foster.

Do you know anything about that?

re: Cloris Leachman - Young Frankenstein

Sorry if all this information is old news by now . . . i am new to the Broadway World:) I just thought it was very interesting to seperate the film from the play since that would be a great marketing tool. Plus . . . www.savefraublucher.com is a new!

re: Cloris Leachman - Young Frankenstein

New article about the website mentioned above:

Fans of Cloris Leachman have started a website campaigning for the actress to be featured in Young Frankenstein.

Leachman, who originated the role of Frau Blucher in Mel Brooks' classic film Young Frankenstein – the basis for the Broadway musical that will open at the St. James Theatre this fall – was reportedly let go from the show. She had previously performed as Frau Blucher in the musical's workshop.

Liz Smith of the New York Post recently wrote: "The producers were so intent on having Cloris reprise her role as the hilariously sinister Frau Blucher that they flew her to New York at the end of last year for a table reading, where she brought down the house. This week the veteran Ms. Leachman, 80 years old, received a 'Dear John' letter from the future production of Young Frankenstein saying the producers, in their wisdom, had decided to keep their two properties - Young Frankenstein the movie, and Young Frankenstein the stage musical - apart. So they said they would not be offering her the role after all. Cloris is disappointed, I'm told, but handling the rejection with her usual good humor. In any case she is up for the Screen Actors Guild Award for her outstanding work in HBO's 'Mrs. Harris,' which starred Annette Bening."

Yeah it sucks...but the want to keep the movie seperate from the musical. I see their point.

re: Cloris Leachman - Young Frankenstein

I think they should start fresh. It feels very odd to me for some reason.

I'm all for Andrea Martin. I hope she takes the role. I adore her and she would be perfect.

re: Cloris Leachman - Young Frankenstein

I brought up Martin's name in the thread months ago announcing Leachman's involuntary departure from the project. I still think she'd be a hoot and hope she gets to do the role.

While I love Cloris, I think it may not have been such a terrible move on the producers part to not have her involved. While I think she would have probably been hysterical and stolen the show, perhaps they want the actress playing the character to do things on stage that someone of Cloris's age wouldn't be able to?

I say don't attack the decision unless you know the specific reasons behind it.

I think Andrea Martin would be fantastic. And, if Martin is not available, Jan Maxwell.

Actually, Jan Maxwell might be better.

Marting WAS offered the role, per The Post, but is unsure (as is Roger Bart, who I think this production needs badly) because of possible TV work.

re: Cloris Leachman - Young Frankenstein

I don't think I've ever laughted throughout an entire performance (the entire time she was on stage I had the giggles) as I did seeing Jan Maxwell in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

re: Cloris Leachman - Young Frankenstein

I love Cloris and I love her in this role, but that being said, I am praying that Andrea Martin gets the part.

While we're at it, let's cast Marc Kudisch as Dr. Frankenstein. I'd love to see that duo back on stage together.

Please no! Marc Kudisch is about as funny as dental surgery.

I loved the idea of Leachman at first, but the more I sit and think about it, it just seems wrong.

Oh, so she has the part, they are just waiting to get her answer? Gotcha...well now I'm praying that she says yes. lol.

Wasn't Kudisch in the workshop as the police inspector?
