Actually, I don't get them replacing Cloris Leachman with Andrea Martin. Much as I love them both. The only major difference I can see is their ages, not their types.
I don't see this as "going a different direction" (as they claimed) with the part... unless they just mean "younger."

Fred Applegate makes sense - he's a Susan Stroman stalwart and a very funny performer.
I love the idea of Andrea Martin as Frau Blucher - she is different enough from Leachman to warrent claiming "different direction." Leachman brings a controlled sense of lunacy to her characters, bringing the laughs in with an expected character choice that nevertheless kills because it is so perfectly timed and delivered. Martin is no less perfectly timed, but there is a sense of danger and insanity in her performances - you're never quite sure what she's going to do next, and she is deliriously funny.

Cheyenne Jackson tickled me. AFTER ordering SoMMS a drink but NOT tickling him, and hanging out with Girly in his dressing room (where he DIDN'T tickle her) but BEFORE we got married. To others. And then he tweeted Boobs. He also tweeted he's good friends with some chick on "The Voice" who just happens to be good friends with Tink's ex. And I'm still married. Oh, and this just in: "Pettiness, spite, malice ....Such ugly emotions... So sad." - After Eight, talking about MEEEEEEEE!!! I'm so honored! :-)

How old is Dr. F? Cause-- I know this is crazy and honestly I don't know what made me think of him-- but how about Gene Wilder? I know he sings some but I don't think he's ever done Broadway.

If Bob Martin wasn't busy flowering the world with DROWSY, I'd love to see him as Dr. Frankenstein.

When people imagine Cloris playing the role, they're imagining the lady who played it in the movie...33 years ago. People should picture their 80 year old relatives, beloved, I'm sure, and then picture them learning a new role, keeping up with constant rewrites, and performing 8 shows a week. Nothing against Cloris, who is in amazing shape for her age, but it just isn't possible.
Behind the fake tinsel of Broadway is real tinsel.

My 80 year old relatives are not in the same league as Cloris Leachman, or for that matter Angela Lansbury. Who will, btw, be learning, rehearsing, and performing a new role at the incredibly advanced age 81. 
Age has nothing to do with it, although Lee may have touched on a very plausible reason why it was decided to replace Leachman - not because at 80 she can't do 8 shows a week. We don't know whether she can or can't. Leachman was 48 when she created the role on screen, and her image is indelible and forever fresh. To see her live on stage looking, well, not 48, and not the Frau Blucher we all love and know by heart - it might be too jarring and disappointing for many, many people who expect our screen icons to never change. It was a smart idea to divorce completely from any ties to the film. It saves many people from potential disappoinment and embarrassment.

If Sutton wasn't apart of the cast, I think I would love to see Hunter Foster as Dr. Fronkensteen. I think also if he wasn't doing Curtains, David Hyde Pierce would be great as Dr. Fronkensteen.
