Yeha they did a few odd promotions--there's a now very rare single they sold which was Billie Trixx's "hit single" from the 60s and then an 80s "comeback version" which actually is never performed in the show, just referenced.
Matt--why would you listen thru 11 albums closely if you found their style monotonous? Yeah I'm flogging a dead horse I just think when people say that it usually means they're not familiar with much past the major singles--particularly seeing how much their sound has changed with different producers etc (from the almost acoustic Release in 2000, etc).
However, while I think it *is* a good score and my view isn't just coloured because I'm a fan (for the record there are many fans who dislike it but usually they're peopel who dislike musicals) I will agree that I'm quite sure it comes off better on CD than on stage (which is true of the majority of interesting flops)
GOldes I don't even remember the name of the director but I believe she (?) was/is more of a 3 dimensional artist actually, famous for projections, sculptures etc. She did a good job of staging their recent N American concert tour and of course that's prob part of the problem--it sounds right that she was a poor choice for a musical
The music and lyrics for carrie are a lot better than closer to heavens in my opinion
The show never played at the venue as they were still doing the venue up just before taboo opened which was long after closer to heaven.
I remember the marquee for closer to heaven been ugly as well and the posters were dull
It was very heavily advertised around Soho(gay community)

If the art was similar to the CD case (that odd red heart handrawn on black) it's a pretty uninspiring and underhwleming logo for posters--I agree.
I reallys houldn't have broguth up Carrie--i'm a big Carrie fan. Still Pitchford's lyrics, especially for any of the none Carrie/Mother songs are REALLY underhelming and I think ane xample fo what happens when a pop lyricist tries to write character lyrics AND sound "up to date and hip" and fails at both (from obvious things like no teenager would say "It's a simple little gig" in 1980s to more ocmplex lines that just fall flat...) CTH on the other hand I think has lyrics that can work as pop but also come naturally out of character and dialogue and it's a huge strength.
