Color Purple Question

Hi folks. I am thinking of taking my 12-year-old daughter to see the show, but I was interested in your sense of how appropriate it is. She has a lot of musical theater experience, but I was a little concerned about the incest theme. For those who have seen it, would you have any hesitation bringing a 12 year old to the show? Thanks very much.

re: Color Purple Question

I saw it in November. The incest thing really isn't as "in your face" as the lesbian relationship. There are kisses between Celie and Shug. When you say experience, do you mean performing or seeing shows? The music and performances are wonderful in the Color Purple. If you think your daughter can handle it, take her to see it because ultimately the show is about more than incest and a lesbian relationship! Enjoy if you go!

re: Color Purple Question

There is - nudity - at a certain angle.

It should be fine, though. I think it is the right balance between getting the message across, but not going so far that you eliminate children from the audience.

Thank you both for your responses. It sounds like it should be fine for her. Thanks again.

re: Color Purple Question

If it means anything, there was a young boy - maybe 13 in front of me.

He seemed a tad bit - shocked - during the little clip of a nude woman. Otherwise, he seemed to enjoy the show (only one scene when he turned to his mother to ask what happened).

re: Color Purple Question

BSO, i've got a question and then a comment. Are you 100% that winters is compeltely nude when she gets out of the tub? I sat on the side orch on front row, and maybe you can't see the lines from the "nude suit", but when I saw the show, I was SHOCKED at first because i really did think she was nude, but the longer i looked, I swear i could totally see the lines.

re: Color Purple Question

I sat in the rear mezz, and I could see that she wasn't nude. She was clearly wearing a suit. I actually remember thinking that they should have hid the lines better.
