I received an email from playbill.com, and I know there are some folk who are really excited for Color Purple, and I wanted to share this, in case you haven't heard these two tracks yet.

Have fun listening! [FYI: the two songs are... Push Da Button (Shug)AND The Color Purple (Celie)]

They're okay, I guess. I like Push Da Button, and Color Purple started off good, but I don't like the little drum beat in the background - sounds cheesy. I mean I woudln't run out to get the OBC, but id go see the show.

I didn't see the previous post, so thanks for this!

I really enjoyed the two songs - very hard to compete with Quincy Jones' film soundtrack and tunes - particularly La Chanze's vocals on Color Purple.

I'm really looking forward to this show!

"Push Da Button" sounds like something Tina Turner might sing. LOL. Fun. Thanks for the post. : )

Checked them out too! I like the title song. I think it'll be very emotional to see it performed live. Just listening to the track gives me goosebumps! :)

Am I the only one who thinks these are 2 of the most generic songs in recent memory? zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz...

I think you might be. The score is innovative and reflects the variety of musical styles: blues, gospel, ragtime, jazz, that were part of our American heritage during the time The Color Purple's story takes place.
The music from this show is both memorable and wonderful. Push Da Button is like a classic Bessie Smith number.

Thanks much kore, I just adore both of these, especially the title song. Ap, my fellow CP defender, this just makes me even more excited for the opening!

yeah, i really dont find them generic at all. They rather easy on the ears and her vocals are great. I can't wait to see how this show does. I Think its going to be a very emotional show. Its not as generic as say...In my life.

Who is singing the Shug song??? And yes, it's a very old-school Tina Turner sounding song.

I too like "The Color Purple" track (more so that the Shug number). It's very much a 'clap-along, tap-along' number. Expect it to be reprised for the company bows (imagine the audience on their feet, swaying, and clapping to the beat). Very church-like.

I fortunately saw the show when I was in business in Atlanta last October. I'm looking forward to the show coming to NY -- and agree that LaChanze is a talent that should be in more shows on Broadway. The Atlanta production was heartwarming albeit uneven (I hope they changed a few numbers -- Miss Celie's Pants did nothing for me and the show needed better choreography). It had the hallmarks of being a popular show -- especially in bringing a diverse audience to NY theatre. The Atlanta production was very accessible too (unlike Caroline or many Sondheim productions).

You said it, BobbyBubby! I'm not impressed with these songs at all. Pop fluff, and not right for the period or the emotions in the story. Much as I love LaChanze (she blew me away in "Ragtime"), and I would love for her to have a leading role in a hit show...

...my hunch is that this ain't it.

"Who is singing the Shug song???"

I am assuming it is Adrienne Lenox from the original cast, but not sure. Pretty dirty song!

"The Color Purple" is definitely growing on me the more I hear it.

I've been looking forward to this because I love the movie so much - but I have to say, I'm not the least bit impressed by those two songs - they leave me wondering if the rest will be as lame. I hope not. We need a good new show in the Boards!

"I don't really get the ending, all i can go with is when after several months,Judith saw Pat sang, and later she kissed him on the toilet, after that the story back to where Pat went down from the stage after he'd sung, and he went to the italian lady.I just don't get it,what Judith exatcly meant when he kissed Pat that she had seen, and did Pat end up together with The Italian Lady? Please help me,thank u very much!"
